Opeth - Watershed

I was surprised by it when I heard the leak...definitely a lot better than I expected. I never again thought I'd say this about a new Opeth album, but I plan to buy it.

Feel the same way. I especially did not like Ghost Reveries at all, but Watershed has been a pleasant surprise.

There has been mention that it's a "grower", but I instantly loved it. The opener Coil.. :kickass:

I'll come back to it eventually. My first (and only) encounter two weeks ago bore the semen of goodness but then again I have not felt the urge to listen again ever since. I've become wildly prejudiced about this band since Deliverance, is the reason. I probably need to buy this one so as to get serious about it.

if it's as good as everyone says, i might try it out, but i really have little need of this band.

a unanimous "kickass album" opinion will convince me

when did they start using keyboards?

let me just say that i have never really heard the brilliance in still life that everyone claims is there. in fact, id take BWP (simply for the title track and instrumental before it) over still life. that being said, i sold or traded them away years ago.

Face it, there is no money in the old sound.

So it seems, but I also don't understand how there's money in the new sound either. I just checked out the Opeth forum and there's a billion new accounts with sub-100-post counts so........there you have it.

they are an easy to digest intro band. ive seen on boards where the kids list Opeth as their ultra-hip name drop.

In short, trendy.

Interesing. I assumed as much but I wasn't sure because I have no idea what trendy heavy music sounds like these days. Apparently, it sounds like Watershed
I can't fathom it personally, though, as their sound is...well...you can read my letter above.

I must say that I liked it enough to buy it and clad I did as these bonus tracks are very good.

Overall, really positive surprise, however I'd like to hear an album full of material like Coil.

Orchid -> Morningrise -> Damnation - Still Life -> the rest (this is as good as D and SL)

Since when was Morningrise so special? Worst one of the first 3 for sure. Still Life used to be my favourite but I can't get into it as much these days. Watershed was a pleasant surprise and a breath of fresh air for the band... once again, I'm pretty sure dorian's ears have been misplaced in an alcohol-related incident some years ago, causing him to lose any ability to weigh the value of music in any respect.

But hey, whatever floats your boat, Jonathan

Since when was Morningrise so special?

I bought it when it was released, it was quite an unique album back then and I still think it is. Of course it sounds very different than any album Opeth have made after it.

Since when was Morningrise so special?

The day it was released.
MA,YH is decent but grew stale after a short while.
Still Life is fantastic and contains many complex arrangments that keep me entertained.
Like Ken, I too like Damnation but there's only a couple real bright spots on the album and alot of filler.

I have to go take a dump now, btw.
