OT:Mystery item - help...

looks like some sort of decoration to me... like maybe a military symbol? but then im not an anthropology major

So, the button idea had been floated around this house before. My main objection to it was that there were buttons just like that in the era, but that they had holes though them - otherwise they don't stay on - and they generally aren't as ornate. I'll still bring it up as a possibility, though.

I like the fishing implement idea more and more. What irritates me is that the dang thing looks so familiar, but I can't place it in its context. I have a vague recollection of seing something like it when I was a kid, but I can't remember where or when.

I am not too sure about the context that it was found in, other than it is in the harbour and that it's a Norse harbour (i.e. viking age).

Maybe it is a half-finished button? It fell into the water before whoever made it could drill the hole?
Or a new kind of button, one could wrap a string around the middle and it should hold on? Or the person tried it, and it didn't work ;)

I can't think of anything else you would make out of a soft bone. Except an axle or something like that, which you would replace from time to time, but that way the bearing stays intact. (This thing doesn't look like an axle though)

Yeah, it kind of looks a bit like some sort of spoke, huh? Only the "waist" makes me think they hollowed it out like that for a reason. I appreicate all the good input so far!
