outboard compressors for vocals

i'm thinking of trying my hand at building a 1176 clone, or maybe buying something else.

any one got any recommendations/suggestions?

i'm quite open minded about the whole thing, but basically i want to experiment with not using so many plugins

I'm in the middle of building my 1176 Clone just now. Waiting for various pieces to arrive for it. Should have it all done by next month... fingers crossed anyway.

It kicks ass on aggressive screaming vocals. I always have one 1176 (plugin, unfortunately) in my vocal chain.

1176 or distressor (using the distressor more often lately)

and keep in mind that a good outboard comp makes only sense with great converters..you don't wanna run the signal through another DA and AD conversion of mediocre quality.

i have been reading a few good reviews on the ART Pro VLA II. Pretty cheap and two channels. Anyone have any experience with these?

I looked around for a tech to do that hairball kit but with no luck. Im ordering a 176 clone from Prime Tonstudiotechnik. Less hassle, calibrated and finished on arrival
