overhead mics

dude
i own a pair of Oktava Mk012's, theyre the best (small diaphragm condensers) overheads for their price
(not the MC012's, they are a chinese rip off model)
as ur in the USA u shud get them from here
http://www.oktavausa.com/
(they are a russian brand, not some dodgey company)
ill upload a clip later if i can

the oktava look good but are way out of my price range, so those are out for now. Sloan, do you know if those 603's are the same or simialr to the 991's because i have 1 of those right now, and if they are then I would just buy 1 of those. Thanks for the quick input guys.

As far as I can tell, the 991's are cheaper. I really like the 603's though and use them for acoustic guitar with good results as well.

The oktavas are awesome because they pick up a lot of the toms. It's really magnificent. Of course if you're micing the toms also you're gonna wanna roll a lot of the lows out of the overheads, but these are a great way to mic a kit without tom mics

Are there any "standard" overhead mics? I know that each model has specific pros and cons. Is there an overhead that is liked by a lot of people or has proofen totally worth the money (like for example the SM57 for guitars)?

I'm using studio project b1 and they work pretty good:headbang: only 99.00 a piece!!

Anyone ever use rode ntk tube Mic for overheads?? I was thinking of getting a pair maybe but Ive never used them:Smug: Or would i better off with like them shure sm81??

those oktava's sound sweet, though the mix is a bit low for them in comparison to the snare and sampled kicks, but its okay. the quality of that crash and ride makes me drool.

can anyone post the MXLs for comparison? i just wanna know if the Oktava's are worth spending twice the money for (and thus having to spend some time saving).

no but i've been told that the rode nt5s sound a lot like the neumanns with a slightly less sparkly high end. I'd think the ntks might be a little too warm for overheads but have no way of knowing

PS I think Andy uses AKG 451s for overheads, doesn't he?

heres the track of just the overheads

wow the oktava's sound really good with the toms and the cymbals. i think it'll make a good combo mix with close micing actually provided you can get a good mix.

hmm any chance I can hear those drums isolated/just overhead mics?

i just got a feeling i'm going with the oktava's, but not 100% cause the other instruments are masking the drums a bit in that mix (plus its myspace which sucks).

thanks for helping me out.

what do you mean the drums isolated
that link is just the overheads,
or do you want a mix of just the drums with the kick and snare and EQ etc
