a few weeks ago i had the exact same problem!
i wanted some good overhead mics but then i reallized that i want a pair of mics for some other actions! - like gangvocals or as roommics!
so, i needed mics with different characteristics and because of using it as a vocal mic, as well it couldn't be a sdc.
i chose a pair of studio projects c3 with their preamp vtb 1 and although i haven't done a whole new recording project, i love what i heard from testing them.
my old setup was shure 16a into behringer mx 8000 preamps and i couldn't do close cymbals micing because of the distortion of the mics i got - so they were quite high above the kit and the stereo field wasn't that wide as i wanted it to be!
now with close micing and the c3's the seperation is much better - wider stereo field and the cymbals sound much better! what is really nice as a side effect is that the whole kit especially the snare sounds so much better with those mics!
so, what is your budget and what are your preamps like - just putting a better mic in front of it will not change that much!
the series of the akg's you mentioned is not prefered by any engineer i know - but that hasn't got to say a thing - i just know nobody who uses them!
cheers,
alex
