These days our ties are closer to the USA.

We've been trying hard to remove those for decades, we came close but now the right wing against immigration have started using the flag as a symbol moreso the southern cross - they don't realise every country in the southern hemisphere have that in their flag but they like to think it's a symbol for Aus.
Influential kids have cottoned on and getting southern cross tattoos, some get the flag so it looks like we'll be stuck with it with this new generation liking the design - fact is we haven't come up with anything better that we can agree on.
These days the Union flag and queen are just for show, the UK doesn't help us out with anything and we have 'Australia' on our passports.
There was a time when those with relatives in England had dual citizenship but no longer, we cut our ties a long time ago.
