Just saw some pics of the Ozzfest new conference and i have to say that time has not been gentle to Halford and Co. ... these geezers look battered

Wow, Halford looks like my grampappy.

Ozzy's a 90 year old woman, but he's been like that for 40 years or so.

Also just a reflection of the fact that bands like Priest and Ozzy still draw the crowds and headline the festivals. Why? Because all the classic material still belongs to them. By now, the metal world should have had 10 new Ozzy's and 10 new Priest's....but it never happened. Am I wrong?

Here's the thing: who else is going to headline the festivals? Why is Wacken still dependent on Saxon and Slayer? etc etc ad nauseum. Isn't there ANYONE who can take over the role of headliner?

I could name a bunch of bands for headliners, but the masses wouldn't like it, 'cause they don't sell like Priest or Fozzy.

That's what I mean. They don't sell because they're not perceived as being as good. The audience is there, they're just buying the same old same old. Shit, 2 years ago I was still buying albums on amazon.com.

New big bands aren't in metal anymore, it's all crap like Linkin Pork and Kid Cock that grab the masses. I think the youth of today gets lamer with each passing generation.

It's all about education, right? Royal Carnage - pretty educational, no? The End Records or Red Stream - pretty good catalogs, right? Now, if you took a percentage of people who went to OzzFest and exposed them to some of these underground artists, you'd probably find this to be quite supportive to the underground itself (without turning it all into a mass MTV frenzy). And then you could have festivals without having to rely on Motorhead headlining for the umpteenth time, and yet do better than hosting 'festivals' in somebody's basement as is done today.

There has to be a happy medium (at least in the US).

I'm not sure what my point is, but I do know that downloading songs for free from underground artists is a shitty thing to do also. In other words, download Ozzy songs and buy Hammers of Misfortune albums.

Damn pity too. Glenn Tipton used to be so fit.

It's damn cool that Priest are doing Ozzfest, but I do hope they don't forget about their home crowd here in Blighty...

The Download festival here in the UK's actually got a pretty diverse line up... the extremity fans have Hatebreed, Opeth, The Dillinger Escape Plan, The Black Dahlia Murder, Slayer, Akercocke, Machine Head (the new album is a complete return to form), Arch Enemy, Viking Skull and the like, the punk kids have Sum 41 and Pennywise, stoners and old people have Monster Magnet and Iggy Pop and The Stooges, and pretty much everyone will be going to see Metallica, no doubt... I'm heading there in two day's time, so I'll turn up on Monday and report back... assuming I actually get to see any bands... I'm staying in a tent with my missus, y'see... *nudge nudge wink wink*

I wouldn't mind going to a festival like that. I wish the Blackest of the Black was an actual festival instead of a regular show with too many bands and far too short setlists. What about second and third stage bands at Ozzfest? Any real underground types there, or is that the place for faggoth still?

Second time I've heard that Python reference today. :tickled:

Go by yourself, best way to meet chicks. Or to become an alcoholic. Either way, sounds like a fun time! :loco:

A slightly more civilised alternative of plonking your ass on a park bench witha bottle of cider :loco:

.......didn't I tell everyone that was what I was doing last week? :erk: Shit...

While we may not have found the next generation of festival headliners, I don't think that reflects too badly on the current generation of metal since the promoters are more conerned with making a profit than promoting bands (with a few notable exceptions, see Progpower)...and those large festivals themselves are a problem in themselves, ask any band who's slogged through a poorly managed event...

I hear you JayKeeley .... todays bands do not last for more than 2 records ... have scattered hits and can never headline a festival like this. Shit ... it took Slayer 20 years to get on the same stage as Sabbath and Priest.

Halford looks freaking old ... looks like he has more chins than a chinese phonebook ... he reminds me of Peter Boyle.
