Ozzy Osbourne to help Taiwan in U.N. membership quest
Wed Jul 4, 7:00 AM ET

TAIPEI (Reuters) - After 14 failed attempts at joining the United Nations using media campaigns and presidential appeals, Taiwan is turning to a local goth-style rock band backed by Ozzy Osbourne in its quest for membership to the world body.

The band, named ChthoniC, will travel to at least 80 cities in four countries by the end of the year, supported in part by the Taiwan government, which is providing pro-U.N. literature and a slogan-painted truck.
The band will visit Canada, Germany, Britain and the United States.
ChthoniC has also recorded a song urging the United Nations to let Taiwan join, even though its bid for membership keeps getting knocked down because of objections from Beijing.
"I'm not for any political party, but I'm for my poor country's joining the United Nations," band lyricist Freddy Lim told reporters on Wednesday at the tour's launch.
Ozzy Osbourne, a satanic-theme rocker known for biting heads off bats on stage, is helping set up 20 of the U.S. gigs, paying some transport costs and letting the Taiwan band promote U.N. membership as it wishes, Lim said. He said the band hooked up with Osbourne through personal connections.
Taiwan's leadership came up with the idea as it prepares to reapply for U.N. membership later this year, the cabinet's news office said on Tuesday.
China blocks self-ruled Taiwan's applications every year because it sees the island as part of its territory and not a separate country. The two sides split after civil war in 1949, and Taiwan left the United Nations in 1971 under Chinese pressure.

very interesting. not only are chthonic's ambitions noble. but i would totally check out one of their shows, provided i'm in the country

Don't support this goal at all.

Awful idea. You get Taiwan in the general assembly and you've got an incredibly pissed off China - and that is the absolute LAST thing this world needs.

China will be pissed off but won't start any military wars. China would probably leave the UN in protest but it would only be temporary because it would not be in their best interest to do so. They are leaning towards capitalism slowly and being a bully to the West is not a good idea.

On another note about Taiwan. Costa Rica were friends with Taiwan for 63 years. Getting financial support as well as trade and recently they said goodbye to Taiwan to let China in. Out of greed. 63 years of friendship down the tubes. It's a big issue in CR right now.

It pisses me off that the uppermost tiers of politics set on the international stage is comparable to the pubescent drama that thrives in high-schools everywhere.

They didn't want to confuse him with the other Ozzy Osbourne who's a famous musician to...

The world needs to stop toadying to China and in fact do the opposite by taking steps to ensure they clean up their act. Everyone is trying to get a piece of the action in China's economic expansion, but the longer this goes on, the more China begins to challenge the US as the world's superpower and then no-one has any influence over China. At the moment China is still heavily dependent on Western countries yet we continue to let them summarily execute more people than the rest of the world put together because no-one wants to 'offend' Beijing.

Why the fuck is everyone afraid of China? Right now China would lose any war they start, and will only suffer if they leave the U.N. and become secluded. China knows this, and so does everyone else. Without the booming Chinese economy nobody would give a fuck about China. And how does one country alone have the power to block a nation entering the U.N.?

The U.N. in it's current state reminds me of the Articles of Confederation... it's too weak to do a damn thing and the nations are way too strong. I for one am a huge supporter or worldwide government but... the U.N. is fucked up.

ender and rabid are right.

china is always upset with taiwan. thats never going to change, even if they rejoin china.

people dont give enough credit to china. they arent stupid. just because they have a big military doesnt mean they are hellbent on using it. just the opposite really. they dont want a war, especially with the US. if they went and tried to take taiwan, they would have the island for about 3 days and then would be forced to turn back because they dont have the ability to hold off a full US attack. and they know it. so why would they risk looking weak to the world?

You overestimate us and underestimate them. Their population is what? 1 to 3 billion. So you can imagine the size of their military. And their weapons are not outdated neither as well as their training. Since 1949 they really haven't lost any military conflict they have engaged or been in. They were involved I believe in the Vietman war as well as the Korean war. We lost one and the other one has been in stalemate for decades. Just because we can kick ass to pissant countries like Iraq, Panama, Grenada etc. does not mean we can kick a powerhouse ass like China. Neither side wants military conflict on each other because both are just about equal in military power though it can be debatable that China is more powerful since we have not seen their true strength imo. So both sides resort to economic war/chess to pressure each other and right now imo China is winning that in alot of areas.

Oh you mean like in Iraq and how we won't win that  but anyways rebellions goes without saying... but we both have nukes and that is why we do not think about military conflicts with each other anymore only economic warfare like we had with Japan after WWII. China is doing the same thing now as they did.

Btw Taiwan is now only recognized as a country by 24 countries instead of 25 now that Costa Rica gave them the boot for those who don't know. Only about 1/4 of the world will recognize them and give China the middle finger about this.

The US unquestionably has the armed advantage against China. China's military might is not as mysterious as you seem to think.

I would probably rethink that if I were you :

Also don't forget they now have the capability to knock out our satellites which was a recent conflict but seems to have died down now because everyone is focused on the economic factor with them presently.

Don't fucking quote wikipedia at me. I've done more than enough research on China and its relations with East Asian countries and the US to know what I'm talking about, especially since it's only been May since I've finished studying the topic. The US has the superior force, without question, and China knows this fact. Their real trump card is the fact that they hold nearly $1 trillion USD in their national bank, and capitalizing on that would hit the US economy very hard. But they're not stupid enough to do that either.

Wow.. someone didn't get laid and woke up on the wrong side of the bed  So now your a military expert and know everything they have military wise and what China thinks  And I suppose you did your research from unbiased books because of course nothing is biased in the West when it comes to information about other nations  .

Nuclear weapons notwithstanding we got our asses kicked in Vietnam by a less superior military backed by China and we couldn't win the Korean war with another less superior military backed by China which is pretty much in stalemate for decades now yet you can say without a doubt we can hold off China in a air, land & sea strike because Doden can't ever be wrong  I also suppose Japan wasn't smart enough to almost destroy our Sea Power at Pearl Harbor back in the day.

If you want to be patriotic that is fine but don't let it cloud your judgement about what a country can or cannot do against us. Because alot has been done against us by other countries that we always think can't be done and they prove us wrong. Our egos is what underestimates others.
