This is my first PROPER recording and i'd really like feedback of every kind. It's not the whole song but I figured i'd re-record the whole track depending on what feedback I got. I think the tone sounds too scooped and the snare went gay because I think I stuck a limiter on it then didn't remove it before I put the track into a mastering template - its also way too loud.

How can I make my mix sound louder/more full on? I tried compressing the output but it just goes fizzy after about 2/3dB of gain in the sequencer but then even if i push the gain to like 50dB(insane i know but i just wanted to test something) it doesn't affect the volume? I'm using logic and for some reason the mix just wont get any louder.

thanks guys!

Do you know how I can get the link to my file from dropbox? i've never used this app before. The link I tried only allows me to access it once I'm logged in and I cant find a link for external viewers

argh its different on my mac it only allows me to go dropbox - browse via web interface. anywhere else I can upload?

THE SNARE!!! it sounds like someone flicking a mic with their finger and the dynamics are wildly out of control. Sample replace it with any of the snare samples found on this forum for instant improvement... also the whole mix compresses when the snare is hit which suggests you are compressing too hard on the master bus.

The guitar tone was quite good, as was the bass drum. Overheads were fine, except the hi-hat was wayyyy louder than all the other cymbals.

How do I get access to the snare samples on the forum? Yeah I was trying to compress the master to raise the overall volume of the track, any ideas on how I could improve the overall volume of the song? My recorded levels are fairly strong but not too strong as to start clipping. I used dfhs ayotte 14" snare from dfhs and a tama starclassic kick. Thanks alot guys, really appreciating this.

woooah, if that snare is from dkfh I suggest doing the following...

1) take all compression off it or only compress it very lightly
2) Download gclip and make a new group for drums, put gclip on it and increase the volume on gclip till the drums are loud.
3) Download W1 limiter and make a new group for guitars, put it on that and make them loud.
4) Put gclip and W1 on the master bus.

Now you have a loud mix... try it and you will see that a loud mix isn't actually what you wan't.

Gclip is a windows only VST..any alternatives? apart from the snare i just think the mix as whole is lacking punch. Do you think thats down to the mids on the guitar? cheers :)

I don't know about a mac alternative.

Take all the master bus stuff off, take all the compression off the snare and upload it so we can listen to the uncrushed mix, and I'll do the best I can to help you.

Joe

I can't mix late at night so ill do it and put it up tomorrow, thanks mate

yah sure ill post it later but its just an edited version of the 'ibby deathcore' tone thats posted in the architects thread, i think its 1/2 pages behind!

Here are some quick steps you might want to try;

1. Keep volumes on all tracks so that the loudest track don't peak over ~-5dB or so.
2. I strongly recommend something that can clip the snare and maybe the kick to kill transients, or it will sound like the first clip where your snare kills the volume of the whole mix.
3. Your master bus should then peak around ~-2dB. Put a compressor on it. But don't set the treshhold to more then -6, and don't set the ratio to over 1:25 or so at max, or the mix will probably start to pump. What you seem to not have realised in the first clip is that you need to apply make-up gain (may be called output-gain, I think?). Just make sure it doesn't clip out. I usually keep my make-up gain at a level where the peak is -0.2 or -0.3 out from the compressor.
4. Use a limiter and adjust it's treshhold/inputgain, to make the mix loud. But not too much or it will pump/sound like shit.

I haven't tried this method, but I think it should be a killer.

Hope this helped you! :)

thanks man helps alot, what did you think about the guitar tone itself though...do you think THAT has the potentiol to sound big as it stands or do you think I should mess around with the tone a bit? I could post a clip of just the guitars if it makes it easier to hear.
