Paul Di'Anno got his US Visa.....

So I went to the show last night in Chicago. I quite enjoyed it except for one thing. People were very rude, at least towards the front of the stage, towards Icarus Witch. I'm curious. Did this happen in other venues on the tour? I thought they played well, so I don't get the booing. The only time I can understand a band getting booed is if they're just utter crap. I can understand some people not digging them but to boo them I didn't quite get, then again Maiden fans are a picky bunch. What I really don't get is that a lot of the people booing even knew they were Dianno's backing band, so if they were there for Dianno why in the world would you be a jackass and boo his band?

I will say this though. I give Paul a whole lot of credit for defending them on stage. I also give the Witch a lot of credit for being able to take it as playing through boos is not the easiest thing to do.

What time did the show end?

I might be going to the other Illinois show tonight, but it depends on end time. The other shows have been going late.

More importantly for me is what time did it start? If it starts late enough I may be able to make the show. My wife already had plans for tonight so I would not be able to leave until she gets back.

Well, it started on time. There were 4 bands. However, Dianno pulled an Axl Rose and started a whole fucking 55 minutes after Icarus Witch's set ended at 10:45, so he didn't even start until 11:40. It didn't help things that people got impatient starting at the 15 minute mark. Ugh.

Di'Anno took to the stage around 11:40 or so.

I like IW a lot, but they are MUCH better on disc than they are live.
The singer was taunting the crowd for being lame.
I mean, it's a no win situation.
The crowd was a bunch of old guys who go to one or two shows a year, who were there for one thing..........Iron Maiden songs live.

Paul did the best he could. His voice was shot from the beginning.
It was still a lot of fun.
It seemed like he put a lot more effort into singing his solo stuff than the Maiden stuff, almost to make the Maiden songs sound worse.

I don't mean to put it down. This was just a show I went into not expecting much.
In the end, it was pretty much what I expected.
A show where people went nuts for the Maiden songs, and the rest was just there.

It isn't pulling an Axl.
This has been the norm for every show on the tour.
It probably has more to do with the Icarus Witch guys resting up a bit before going back out.

I didn't know you were going. We could have car pooled.

You're right. We probably could have. haha. I'm so used to knowing people who aren't into my cup of tea musically, that I'm so used to going solo.

I don't know though. I mean Icarus Witch resting after a 30 minute set? That's a little absurd to me. True though, they did taunt the crowd a bit with not getting into it, which as a support band you can do it once or twice to get them up, but if it doesn't work after that, the singer probably should've given it up. I think it was more the singer's vocals that people weren't that into.

But yeah, I knew it would get delayed, but I thought the whole night has been and it was only his set. I still enjoyed it though. Like you, as far as the quality of his voice I wasn't expecting a whole lot. Plus, let's be honest, he's always had a fairly gravily voice and always has had punk-like vocals, so it isn't a big step down unlike if Dickinson or Halford's voice was shot. Plus, the cigarettes he smokes (which he even smoked while Icarus Witch played Transylvania) probably doesn't help. Haha.

Met-Al called me on his lunch break today to tell me about the show. Needless to say, he and our friend Justin were less than impressed, and ended up leaving long before DiAnno even finnished his set. But what gets me is that JOSE left before they did! I can only imagine how bad the show must have been if Jose the Iron Maiden Fanboy left early. :/

Yeah I was highly disappointed the whole night as my Facebook rants showed. I left right after Killers.

The main reason they got booed is that the singer kept talking crap to the audience during their whole set. It's ok to be upset that they are not digging your band but talking crap before, during and after every song in your set is not gonna win the crowd over.

Also, the majority of the people there were older folk who most likely haven't been to a show in a while. If you combine that with a sold out crowd you get some uneasy people in attendance. One guy got into an argument with my friend cause he said that he kept backing into him, it's like dude you're at a sold out METAL SHOW, of course people are gonna bump into you. Then it took 50 minutes after IW for Dianno to come out so he didn't get on stage 'till almost midnight. Having to sit through 3 bands that I didn't like, being packed like cattle and putting up with sensitive a-holes that don't want you to bump into them it made for a very unpleasant show experience.

Whatever the case, I'm glad I got to see the first singer for my favorite band who was fired from it 17 days after I was born.

The singer wasnt talking crap....he was just kind of goofing on the crowd for just literally standing there. He wasnt even doing it in a mean spirited way. People in the metal scene have way to thin skin.

I do recall you liking Icarus Witch at the Alehorn show. Kind of disappointing that you turn on a band over comments live.

What was your opinion of DiAnno's off color remarks on the homosexual community in LA?

I loved Icarus Witch at Alehorn, they had a great set and I ended up buying one of their cds. They were also one of the bands that I wanted to make a point of seeing when they came back. What I'm saying is that the reason he was booed was that he was talking crap so it is justified. Did people have thin skin that night? Of course they did, hence why they were bitching about people simply bumping into them. But that is not a reflection of the overall metal community like you claim.

Also, I can "turn" on any band anytime I feel like it without justification whatsoever and so can you. :) This time however I did have a reason.

Bob it seems like you are taking this personally for some reason.

What was your opinion of DiAnno's off color remarks on the homosexual community in LA?

Here's my opinion in 3 words: It's Paul Dianno. ;)

I am not taking it personally....I am trying to wrap my head around everyone who got so upset about Icarus Witch last night.

Believe me...you have seen me turn on bands before.

I have have no stake on Icarus Witch....I was just curious why everyone was so negative at the show....sure it wasnt a blast or anything.

I do know that seeing Paul DiAnno live once is enough for me.

After reading these comments I am sooo glad I didn't go last night. The main reason I didn't go was the time and these shows starting so late on a week night.

I really only wanted to see Paul for the fact of seeing Paul. The first two Maiden CDs are good but not even close to being in my top 5 Maiden CDs. It would have just been something cool to see the first Maiden singer but it doesn't sound like it was cool at all.

Jose, you seriously left early????????????
I did notice you guys weren't behind me anymore when it was over.
I didn't know you took off though.

Yeah, no one went to this thing expecting to see the greatest metal show of all time.
It was just one of those "once in a lifetime" things to see the original Maiden vocalist.

To be honest, I just got a kick out of watching Paul look like he was about to have a grabber at any moment!

Also, his off color remarks about Maiden were funny (IE - referring to them as the Spice Girls!)
