PC problem

I put XP on here a couple of weeks ago. Not sure if that was the best idea or not, but anyway...I had more than a few GB free last time I checked, and now there is apparently 739MB free and I haven't put that much crap on, a couple of programs and a few mp3s...definately not the enough to fill it that much. So what could be the problem? Where's the offender? Help!

I have no porn on here!

I was going to say, it may have something to do with me ripping some cds, and it may have saved WAV files somewhere, but I can't find them if it did that.

Also, I just checked it now, and there is 366MB free, and I haven't done anything since I last posted! o_O

Have you got Service Pack 2 installed? Because if you don't, the original addition has a lot of security problems. When I first got XP my computer fucked up as soon as I connected to the internet.

I maybe of a german background and tell people what to do with their computers but that hardly makes me a Nazi! :)

Yeah, it'd either be a swapfile, tmp files (including recovered disk errors) or upgrade files.

Have a look inside

C:\Documents and settings\(username)\Local Settings\Temp
and
C:\Windows\Temp
and see if there's a fuckload of stuff. Some stuff can't be deleted 'cos it's gonna be in use by XP but most stuff can be safely trashed.

Look around in the root directories of your hard drives for .chk files too - they're recovered files from CHKDSK scans and can usually be deleted too.

The swapfile... well, you're shit out of luck with that if it's big, it's kind of necessary for a lot of stuff (even when you have a shitload of RAM too - some programs actually rely on that to work at all).

Upgrade files... go into the Add/Remove Programs and see if you can find uninstall options for the upgrades - it'll usually tell you if it's safe to uninstall them.

... or then again, it could just be the porn too! :p

I just had a look at all that stuff, except the swapfile, and deleted it all, and it didn't make much difference. So how do I check if the swapfile is the problem?

This doesn't look good. :(
