Peavey 5150 Bias Values

This falls into the "if everyone else is doing it you should do it to" category, just because some people like one sound, doesn't mean its the end all say all. everyone is entitled to their opinion, I know of many people that bias mod their amps and still keep them relatively cold, it all comes down to what you like and if the mod is worth it.

Hmm...

I've had 6505s modded, and heard several other modded 6505s belonging to other people, and in my honest, educated, and experienced opinion, just about nothing beats a stock 6505 with a good boost for delivering awesome metal tones.

Derp.

I have formulated my own opinions, as well, by owning over 70 different tube amps, not counting the ones I've had multiples of (which includes at least 14 amps from the 5150 family). So, you can throw out your own credentials to make it seem like I don't know what I'm talking about to every one, and to belittle my opinion, but in the end, I highly doubt you've had more experience with most guitar amps than I have.

You apparently care quite a bit, otherwise you wouldn't be going on about this. People are tough guys on the internet. If I'm going to state my opinion, I'm going to back it up with the fact that I've owned more than one 5150. I never once said you didn't know what you were talking about, but let's consider this:

My Bogner Ecstasy, from the factory was biased to 19mA. I'm sure they don't know what they're doing over there, especially when they sell $2.6k amps on average, to discriminating musicians for the most part, at that.
My Baron K2, to 22mA
My 5150, to 14mA
Mesa Boogie Amps don't even have adjustable biases for the most part...

On that note, I've never in my life even seen a stock amp from the factory biased over 30mA, let alone 26mA...

And let's not forget that the REAL way to know if an amp is producing crossover distortion is to scope the power amp to look at the sine wave it's producing.

..and then realise that a certain amount of cross over distortion sounds good in a geetar amp. Anyone who likes cranked Marshalls thinks so.
You're pretty much left with bias to whatever sounds good.

I'm just afraid a lot of people buy into the bullshit of a hot bias and cross over dist being bad, without actually engaging their ears.

Bullseye, and my 6505 TO ME sounded best stock, with the bias at 18mA.

In my opinion some brands use a very cold bias to let the amp works in "safe mode" with the crappy tubes they mount.
Anyway I usually change the bias value to fit different style.
