Peavey Ampkit for iPhone

I'm assuming there's no technical reason why this app wouldn't work with an iRig from IK Multimedia, right? Already have my iRig pre-ordered and it will arrive any day now, but it would be great to have both apps available to get tones on the go.

It will work, but we're not anticipating it will work as well as with AmpKit LiNK. The AmpKit LiNK is a powered connection so that it can pass high-gain amp sims through your device without creating feedback or cross talk. You can read more about it here:

That makes tons of sense. You guys have clearly done a better job with both the hardware and the software, at least from what I can tell on the web (not having used either, obviously.) Thanks for the info!

My iRig arrives today via FedEx and I will post first impressions once I get it.

Honestly why does everyone have to have an iphone app, why would you play your guitar through your iphone? What advantage is there to using the computer application?

I can think of lots of reasons. All of which I have to currently carry around as well as my cell phone.

1. Home practice amp. With record capability. hey sometimes I like to play on my porch with headphones.

2. Touring which would be taking down ideas or practicing on the van or bus (if we're dreaming)

3. Backstage warm-up and tuning.

4. Traveling. I have to often travel for a week+ at a time. And will often jam with buddies while I am at it.

5. Jamming with friends or meeting with band-mates to work on new songs, not at regular practice volume. We often meet at houses to learn/exchange riffs and such.

6. If it sounds worth a damn, laying scratch tracks or using to monitor while taking DI's.

7. If it sounds worth a damn, open mic nights or even light gigging.

The point is, all of these scenarios I will have my phone with me. And sure you can carry around a POD, or something like that. I use a Zoom H4N or an RP500 or a Sansamp GT2 right now. All of which are bulkier, and more for me to carry around.

I don't see it replacing my main rig for serious gigs, and definitely not main main metal gig where the looks of the bulk is almost as important than the sound :) I would bring 4 full stacks if I could.

Imagine how much battery power this would use. You'd only be able to play for a half hour TOPS consistently, before you'd have to recharge. Especially with the iPhone 4 having all of these antenna/battery problems as is.

Though I will say, if I ever saw someone whip this app out at a party, and start playing guitar through the iPhone speakers.. I'd be forced on an almost subconscious level to throw his fucking phone at the wall and stomp on it. Other than that, I don't really know what to think of this app, besides the fact that it's Peavey trying to make an extra buck O_o

How useful is this in realworld situations.. Really? Besides acting as a functioning tuner/taking down some quick DI's for those riff ideas that you may forget later on.

Errr..so your phone is lighter than a pedal or whatever..

But you have to carry your guitar around to use it? So err..convenience, nulled? I mean if you're already lugging around a guitar...

If you're going to jam with people..what are you going to do, all go through your iphone speakers? You may as well buy one of those gimmicky belt amp things, or plug it in to a real amp..oh..wait.

Most people on the forums are around computers all the time when they want to record quick ideas, usually that's where their guitars are.

I just don't get why things all need to be on iphone even if it's completely impractal and useless.

I haven't had any problems with the battery... it's way better than the 3G... and I'm guessing if you put the phone in standby and the amp sim still runs in the background with the screen off, I'd imagine several hours of jamming would not be unrealistic

Just because it's impractical and useless to YOU doesn't mean it's impractical and useless to everyone...

Well again, I already carry my guitar, to rehearsal, on tour, to shows. I already carry an extra recorder with sims and potentially a pedal. Extra batteries, another small potentially stolen thing. I already have my phone on me, and like everyone I carry it everywhere. Try juggling a guitar and laptop and interface in a van or in a back corner of a bar just to jot a riff idea or warmup. My H4N cost me $300, any other headphone amp will be $40+ easy. Guitar+H4N+headphones, way easier.

Friends often have a stereo system or small recording setups. But only enough pedals/amp sims for themselves. So you still have to bring your own, their computer may be enough to record, doesn't mean it can handle amp sims at low latency.

Open mics always have a PA. The rest would be with headphones. Or to act as a quick idea grabber. Even at rehearsal, we don't have a recording setup there. Bringing and leaving a laptop/interface is way more to carry. Got an idea, jot it down. What else can you do on the go and how much does it cost?

Most compact pedals are marginal at best, most don't even have speaker simulation. POD's and such are fairly large, not fitting in most gig bags, and definitely not a hardshell. They are even tight in a backpack if you have anything else in there. Not to mention the app and interface costs less than the gimmicky amp sims and heaphone amps which only does one thing, and typically poorly.

I am not going to run out and buy an iPhone just because of this app. But it makes a great contender when you consider all the other stuff available: 4-track recorder, internet anywhere with coverage, MP3 player, tuner, decibel meter, pro tools and cubase controller, GPS, etc.

Battery life and such could potentially be problematic. Will have to wait and see how that goes and how it sounds.

I don't get it ... why should I use an iPhone? That thing has a weak battery and if someone calls me my while I'm recording I would throw that phone on the wall.

In regard to battery life of the device - AmpKit is not our first application, and we're doing some very serious optimization for the program. We think you'll be pretty surprised by the battery life.

Excellent, good to hear! :)

Waiting to read reviews/see how this turns out for sure.. And to anybody claiming the un-usefulness of the app, It really just depends on the type of musician/person you are and what you would need out of it.

I know I'd use this as a tuner, to track down DI's, and practice to myself quietly with headphones from time to time.. That is of course, if I HAD an iPhone

I don't know why you're saying it'd be handy for rehersals. Do you mean you'd plug in your iphone in to the PA and ignore the amps at your rehersal space? Or rehearse all through your iphone speakers or all sit there listening to your own headphones out of sync with the rest of the band?

You couldn't record everyone off your phone either, so I'm not sure why you bring this up. Sure you could all plug in through a mixer if they had one.

While I do understand the convinience of just putting out your iphone and plugging your guitar in to it, recording something and then sending it quickly (for some people it seems like its while you're out frolicking anywhere and happened to have taken your electric guitar). I can't think of many situations I wouldn't have a better way of doing this though.

What if you got a phone call or a text message? This totally negates using it for an open mic night..I don't know why you would do that anyways.

It looks like most people are trying to find situations to use it for the sake of using it, rather than they have situations already where they'd need something like this.

If electric guitars were highly portable and you could just whip it out and play in to your headphones on the street or on the bus, that'd be great..but that's not the case in any way.

Anyways, this is probably getting pretty off topic, I just think it's gimmicky and everyone has to have an iphone app these days for the sake of it.

No, not for playing live. In most metal bands, the guitarists are the riffmakers. Always exceptions of course. So you are running the set. Noodling on break... have a riff idea? Plug into your phone, jot it down. I can't count how many riffs I have lost otherwise, so I carry my H4N already which is bulkier and another device to carry around.

What happens if you get a call or text while you are playing anyway, do you answer it? I try to at least finish the set first. You would have to remember to put it in airplane mode I am guessing.

Anyway it is no more gimmicky than a micro-amp, any headphone amp, when the first POD's came out, etc. Out of all those options, even counting the little interface, it is still more compact than any of the others. And it could actually sound worth a crap and assuming you have an iphone, it is cheaper too.

This argument is really pointless anyway. For everything new, there were many that thought it was a gimmick, and many that incorporate it into their daily lives. I can't count the number of people that gawked at Laptops (especially recently netbooks), the iPhone, going back farther, the Palm pilots, cell phones (who needs to make a call from anywhere?), the desktop PC. And guess what, do you still consider them a gimmick after years of happy customers and millions sold? Plenty of failed products, gimmicky or not... only time will tell I guess.

EDIT: or even more recently. The low-watt tube amp craze lately? Still are too loud to record without disturbing the neighbors, not loud enough to gig or keep with a band or barely when pushed to max, not to mention no FX loop and no channel switching in most cases. Totally useless to me. Hmm... but it works great for many people, just about every amp company has jumped on board, and they are selling like hotcakes!

I think it would be cool, to have so i can sit in the same room with my kids and jam through headphones while they watch their toons.
It would also be cool to use it to warm up before you hit the stage.
Is this app a watered down version of revalver?

Not the same program. We (Agile Partners) developed AmpKit from the ground up. We started from the beginning of the App Store with GuitarToolkit, then later released TabToolkit.

AmpKit is our biggest offering yet, and we're working hard to push the iPhone/iPad/iPod to the edge of their capabilities...
(while preserving battery life, of course)
