I picked a brand new Peavey 6505+ around 9 months ago.....it would regularly blow fuses...and make a terribly harsh sound...one that that was unrecordable - so I took it to the amp repair guy and he pulled it to pieces while I was there, it was completely unbiased.....he actually swore at how it was his said "it just seems as though these cunts just throw the tubes in without any thought or testing"

Anyway for those conisdering buying a new Peavey head, maybe factor in $80 to have your local (trusted) tech set it up for you....

I'm glad you finally got a chance to take the amp out to get looked at Dean! Has it come back from the shop yet? How's it soundin? That amp has some serious potential that, IMO, it simply wasn't providing whenever I'd heard it.

Was it Paul at Soundworks you took it to? I recall having people tell me that someone up there never liked Peavey's quality control.

Its not so much peaveys fault as it is the tube company sending out bad batches of tubes. Peavey trusts the tube companies to test their product before shipping because of the high volume peavey puts out. Unlike smaller handmade amp companies they make too many to do a proper burn in with every product. At least that is how I understand it. If you contact peavey directly they would be more than happy to send you a new set of tubes(they overnighted two sets to me when I had bad ones on arrival in a jsx).

I've just got it back and the sound is fantastic :OMG:...I mean really great !

I took it to Simon in Moorabin, its still got the exact same tubes in it, from what he said it was not giving enough "biase" it was running "too cold"....if you want more details I'm happy to go back to him.

he believes that maybe the shop that I bought it from may have replaced the tubes and that was the issue , the amp was not set up to take the tubes (Rubys 6l6)

I reckon it must be the exception more than the rule, cause theres 2 other guys I know use the same amp and don't have the issue I have.

In any case it now sounds just awesome compared to what I was living with

I just bough a 5150. Block Letter. Still has stock tubes. So I assume that's why it's a little noisey. But it's working charmingly. Cranked the shit out of it before. I was worried it was going to blow up when I got it home.

I don't have much experience with Peavey QC but I know the block letter needs to be biased, had a guitarist I know playing it and it sounded like ass on any eq setting, really peaky. Convinced him to spend 200 bucks on new tubes...since he put in MESA tubes thinking they were "better sounding"...and a bias job, and a bit of cleaning, the thing smokes. Great amp, great design, I think I'll get one of the Mark IIIs when I'm rich.

Also, a good portion of cost for bias and all that was shipping to a tech...It shouldn't cost you a whole lot more than around $80 or so, but prices do vary, provide the tubes if you can find them somewhere cheaper, it'll save your wallet.

the 6505+ do have bais adjust its the 6505s that dont.

TO be honest you dont neet to take it to a tech to ge the bias set, just get a multimeter for about £5 and do it yourself. Its really simple!!!

Also if you buy an amp new and theres a problem I can believe you would pay to take it to a tech instead of back to a dealer to get it done under warrenty. If youve got spare cash to throw away maybe you could send some thins may!!!
