Aloha.

I'm at the mixing stage for a band I'm working with. I have a really good mix going for the first song, and they want all of the songs to have a similar mix.

So, I saved all of the FX chains from the previous song, the one that is already mixed, in hopes that I could apply it to the other tune--seeing that they were both recorded in the SAME EXACT setup.

So, I apply all of the same FX chains hoping to tweak a few things so there are SOME differences, but it sounds completely different. It sounds like dick really.

I have everything set the same exact way; same routing matrix, same levels, same everything. Yet is sounds 100% dicklike. Anybody know why?

EDIT: Let me add that there's is plenty of SSL in the bunch. =b

Choose a track that you know that is sounding different. Uncheck all the plugins and settings. Play it. Sounds right? If so, check the next plugin and try again. And keep doing this until you find the link of the chain that isn´t right.

Without having heard any of the songs my first thought is that it could be the arrangement of the songs.

The best way to transfer mix settings between songs is via SWS Snapshots.

Watch these two super quick tutorial vids I made:

fuck. yes.

Thanks adam! You're always good help.

I do have a quick question for you regarding your Reaper workflow/layout.

I've been using it, and I love it. The only thing I can't seem to figure out is how to insert an FX on a single take rather than the whole track. I think it used to be Sift+E or something like that, but now I'm not so sure.

NSGUITAR, instead of saving presets, or something, go to your first mix, delete all automation, delete all audio regions and import the audio files from the next song and see if that works, that way you know for sure no plugin parameters were lost as they werent even imported. See if that helps

Why did I NOT think of this. Thank you sir. =)

I don't really use them but it's still easy to do, just hit "shift + /" to open the action list, find the action "Show FX chain for Item Take" and assign it to whatever key command you want.

My old Pro Tools customizations are way out of date compared to my current Reaper setup... Copying a bunch of the Pro Tools commands was a good starting point, but after that I started taking full advantage of Reaper's own benefits and building basically a hybrid workflow that has the best of both worlds. The majority of the basic commands are the same though which is nice when I need to jump back into Pro Tools for any reason.

Heh, nothing, those are the natural drum sounds (besides kick, only a trigger was recorded) sent to me by another engineer to edit. Didn't realize that was easy to find publicly, will have to take that down...

Lol yeah. Didn't mean to publicize it if it wasn't supposed to be!

I love the work you share!
