Would the more expensive processor be worth the extra money?

Intel™ Core®2 Duo E6300 1.86GHz/1066MHz/2MB L2/Dual-core/VT [Included in Price]

Intel™ Core®2 Duo E6400 2.13GHz/1066MHz/2MB L2/Dual-core/VT [add $319]

Intel™ Core®2 Duo E6600 2.40GHz/1066MHz/4MB L2/Dual-core/VT [add $489]

Intel™ Core®2 Duo E6700 2.66GHz/1066MHz/4MB L2/Dual-core/VT [add $709]

Intel™ Core®2 Extreme X6800 2.93GHz/1066MHz/4MB L2/Dual-core/VT [add $1,134]

I want a processor that can handle Windows Vista (the top of the line version, not the basic version), but I don't want to spend a ton. From what I've read about these new Core 2 Duo processors, they CRUSH AMD something fierce. But 1.86GHz sounds slow to me; however, reviews say otherwise.

Is the small bump in GHz anything to worry about? I do lots of stuff at one time, so I'm getting 2 GB of RAM. However, I am just now maxing out my old P4 1.6GHz machine (with 512MB RAM).

By the way, these prices are from Dell. Don't give me any of that "you should buy this or that" crap. I just want to know about the processors.

get an AMD.

but the answer to your actual question is is FUCK NO. if you pay $319 for an additional 260 MHz you're fucking dumb

The reviews of the new Intel's have been so positive the their stock price has actually jumped. There isn't one review saying that AMD has anything even remotely as good as the new Core 2 Duo's.

But thanks for the answer on the GHz question.

AMD is still better value for money unless something very radical has happened, and i really really really doubt that buying intel suddenly became a viable (/economically sound) option since it hasn't really been for the last 5 years or so

Hey nerds, is $1,675 a good price for a laptop with the following?

Intel® Core™ Duo Proc T2250 (1.73GHz/533MHz/2 X 1MB L2 Cache)
17 inch Wide Screen XGA+ Display
2GB Shared Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 533MHz
80GB 7200RPM SATA Hard Drive
8x CD/DVD burner (DVD+/-RW) with double-layer DVD+R write capability
256MB ATI MOBILITY™ RADEON® X1400 HyperMemory
Integrated Sound Blaster® Audigy™ HD Software Edition

And what kind of games do you think that'll be able to play? I need to buy my first laptop pretty soon and I don't know shit about them.

yeah it's a pretty good laptop, especially with the crazy video card they give you. Wow, I bought my laptop last year and it has a 64mg video card, lame.

If that's a Dell, make sure to do Google "dell coupons". My brother just bought almost that exact laptop, and he found 20% off coupon by doing a search. He ended up saving over $400.

if a computer is old enough to not run scummvm properly, it probably is a 486 DX-33 with ms-dos 6.22 and thusly at will run the original scumm games anyway so it's not an issue

@nate any new duel core cpu will run vista, and don't buy anything from Dell ever!! they're shit! (couldnt help it)

@Erik, It's not just an extra 260MHz, they're are other things that make a cpu better then extra MHz.

@whoever, Yes the new Intel shit on the current AMD stock but give it a month and they won't, unless they get to caught up with the recent purchase of ATI.

After looking at Nates post again, you actually are right Erik only an idiot would considering the prices listed arnt even vesable i can buy an E6300 for around $319AU and its only $50 or so more for the E6400.. just found this on dell customising a pc, not sure where you got your prices from Nate. Stay clear of Dell.

It depends on where you're pricing the system (small bus. or home office) and which system. Sometimes the CPU's are better deals in the different areas. It makes no sense, but I think it is some sort of marketing.

I like Dell because my family and I have gone through MANY dell products over the years and NONE of them have had the slightest problem. Plus, if you buy from Dell Small Business, you can get an acutal English speaking American to help you with support questions.
