I have to play in the UK this month and will not be able to take my 6505. I will be using a friends X3live thru a power amp. Please can someone give me a pointer to the best patch to start from for a good live tone?

the patch you use all depends on the guitar and amp you're using.
For metal I've found the best models to be the Criminal (5150) Diamondplate (Triple Rectifier) and the Spinal Puppet, use the screamer stomp in front of the amp to tighten up the low end.
When playing live through a poweramp I switch off the cab and mic modelling, and just use the POD as a preamp. I keep it on studio direct and don't mess about with any of the "stack poweramp/combo poweramp) stuff.
Hope this helps...

IMO the best hi-gain model is the Diamondplate with Treadplate cab and 57 mic on axis with 100% gain, 60% presence (the rest of the settings really depends on gear and player). Use the noise gate and the Tube Screamer (drive 15%, gain 50%, tone 50%). As it´s for live use you may try the Lunatic amp model, that is generally too over the top for recording, but pretty cool to play live.

Thanks for the input guys - appreciated.
I will be playing thru power amp into some old (most likely) marshall cab 1960....so i guess it will be best to switch off cab sim.

When it comes to the Pods, I too am a 'Big Bottom' man. (Oo-er.) Big Bottom amp plus Tube Screamer does the job for me. Remember to turn off the mic sim as well as the cab sim. Personally I just pick the stack output mode setting on mine but if you want to go manual, I expect that is fine also.

Be warned though, the X3Ls are notoriously unreliable. Take a look at the Harmony Central reviews for reports on this.

I like big bottom alot too, the mesa models aren't too bad either..

Big bottom with bass about halfway, mids full up (this model doesn't have much anyway) treble and presence to taste, gain about halfway, sound pretty cool for most things. TS is not needed with this model imo, it's tight enough on his own.

the chunk chunk model is cool too if it doesn't need to be that thight

X3Live can do 2 tones at once, so you might want to experiment with that too. My guitarist has one tone really middy and one really scooped, individually they sound crap but together they're really nice.

Fantastic info. all! I will have a rehearsal b4 the gig so i will have the chance to call up the patches mentioned and dial in something reasonable for the shows (still wish i could take my 6505...). All good!
