does the opening of "Pharoah" count as being a poly rhythm? for whatever reason i don't think it should, because both riffs are in 4/4 , but i have also heard many different definitions of what is or is not a poly rhythm, thanks

The true definition of polyrhythmic patterns is:
"The systematic exploitation of different rhythms performed simultaneously,
whereas the contributing rhythms are chosen such that the numbers denoting their rhythmic relation, are relatively prime to each other"

Pharaoh does not seem to be polyrhythmic to me. It may have that sound because of Jason's "alternate" beats, but are there different distinct rhythms performed simultaneously? It doesn't sound like it to me. You can find many fine examples of true polyrhythms in tribal African music, also in some Techno styles.
(what quickly comes to mind).

I think it's polyrhythmic. When the guitar's just doing quarternotes and the bass/drums/keys are doing that different rhythm... then again when the guitar/drums/keys are doing one rhythm and the bass is tapping that hemiola thing.

Either way, you gotta love the intro to that song.

Communion And The Oracle has rhytmic layers especially in the intro:
guitar picking is in 21/8 (10/8 and 11/8) and the keyboard was something like 23/8 or so. The ending of the song is similar: guitar in 5/4 and bass in 7/4.

The Eyes Of Medusa has a part where's guitar in 3/4 and the rest of the band in 4/4. Sounds cool!
