Oldskool satanic black metal huh?

fits perfectly after Burzum on my list. it's actually a slow depressing song by a famous turkish singer. most of her stuff can be considered pop, but there are some songs back from the 80's and early 90's that are not poppy at all and really blow one away. a couple of my american friends like it. the title means 'who has taken you' .

I find it so hard to believe that noone has posted anything about Red House Painters yet.......if you want to hear depressing music check out songs like

DROP

Medicine bottle

Moments

Void

River

Strawberry Hill

possibly among the most depressing songs ever is "Im Sorry"

Im tellin ya.....RHP is king of depression....thats my opinion and Im sticking to it!

Like I wrote in another forum (possibly the Orphaned Land forum) if you listen to Sentenced a lot (a bit too much?) then the songs that would otherwise be depressing, and about death, somehow become a celebration of death itself. If you reach that point, then the songs are not depressing, they are giving you hope of a better place than life, thus being almost uplifting, a release from pain!

Anywho, Anathema are always great if your mood is a bit too good!

TRUE !!!

Saturnus - For your demons
Anathema - Angelica
Anathema - A dying wish

Nothing beats these 2 bands when it comes to depressing tunes. Lovely music.

My Dying Bride: "For My Fallen Angel"
Katatonia: "Gone"
Katatonia: "Saw You Drown"
Opeth: "Isolation Years"
Emperor: "The Wanderer" :headbang:
Katatonia: "Day"
errr....too many to name

there are so many depressing songs in anathema's eternity and alternative 4. it's hard not to like those two albums.

I could repeat many things but I wont.

Clann Zu\...

Five Thousand More (especially if you know its context)
Crashing to the Floor (an Irish dance jig, but check out the lyrics
You're Listening to a Dead Man Speak
án deireadh scéal
One Bedroom Apartment
You'll Have To Swim

Adagio for Strings

Yeah, actually. Easily the most depressing thing I've ever heard, anyway.

The 2nd movement of Ravel's Piano Concerto in G Minor is a very close second.

Kevin Gilbert's "Song for a Dead Friend" actually is the closest to tear-jerking thing I've ever heard (well, with vocals anyway). Some kind of folk I guess. It's an extremely depressing vocal/piano thing. If you've ever had a friend that died I defy you not to cry like a baby.

As for rock/metal, hmm...

Novembre - Nostalgiaplatz (one of my top 3 bands ever :D)

Pain of Salvation - Undertow (spinetingling vocal performance and even the lyrics are damn good - practically everything on TPE1 and RL could qualify here, this is just the most depressing IMO)

Glassjaw - Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About Silence (this band is just amazing, and this song especially never fails to give me goosebumps)

Finger 11 - Famous, Stay and Drown (despite turning into a horrid turd of a pop rock band their second album is seriously one of the most depressing things I've EVER HEARD)

Novembers Doom - Last God (sheer aural death - they have several other songs that would make this list but none of them are as crushing as this one)

Anathema - Last Goodbye, Are You There?

Katatonia - Saw You Drown

Jeff Buckley - Lover, You Should Have Come Over (this is the best song ever written as far as I'm concerned)

Opeth - To Bid You Farewell

Type O Negative - World Coming Down (I love this band)

Honorable mentions:

Rapture - Gallows, Transfixion

Lots others I forget :D

Katatonia-Saw you Drown, Quiet World and others
MDB-My Wine in Silence
Stone Sour-Bother
Slipknot-Vermilion pt. 2
Rapture- I Am Complete
Throes of Dawn-Ophelia
Sentenced-Killing Me, Killing You, You Are The One, Aika Multaa Muistot(Everything is Nothing)

here's my list...be sure to take some anti depressants before listening ;)

katatonia-day
katatonia-help me dissapear
dark tranquillity-auctioned
nevermore-dreaming neon black
burzum-tomhet
my dying bride-black god
anathema-forgotten hopes

My Dying Bride- For my fallen angel

No way, the most depressing Kata-song is "Day"!

So, my list:

- Katatonia - Day
- Anathema - They Die (!)

Props to Endaemion for mentioning The Wounded, "Atlantic" is a superb (and indeed depressing) album!
