I agree with just about everything in this topic that I know, and I want to particularly mention these two songs:

Nine Inch Nails - And All That Could Have Been
Portishead - Roads

as a resounding YESYESYESYESYES! AATCHB is one of my favorite songs ever... it was truly my addiction last year. Roads... where to begin? So perfect, so beautiful, so depressing. Listen to them!

YEAH that NIN song is incredibly depressing and great, I've been listening to it a ton the last week or two. "Leaving Hope" off the same album is nearly as depressing (it's just instrumental). Those are probably his best two songs, just amazing.

5) Katatonia - For Funerals to Come
6) Katatonia - Day

8) In the woods.. - Mourning the death of Aase
9) The Cure - Bloodflowers
10) Portishead - Roads

the requiem for a dream theme is more scary than depressing, especially the last version. i saw kronos quartet perform it in a concert and it was even better. once one knows the context in which it appears towards the end of the movie, one might appreciate it even more.

I agree about "Heartattack In A Layby", but I think that "Collapse The Light Into Earth" is definitely one of their happier songs.

I'll post a list a little later... I need some time to think. :)

Well, I guess you're right. CTLIE isn't so depressing at all, but it has a depressing flavour, with the piano and lyrics such ''I won't cover my head in the dark and I won't forget you when we part'' (I'm not sure about the lyrics I just write what I hear :)).
