It's funny because I have to teach Italians to speak English phonetically...the Queen's English. Goddamn it's annoying. Must everything that comes from England be so rigid? Why can't the English be more like the Irish or the Scots? I love the English as well but sometimes in the professional world you just want to throw them out a window to maybe knock that corncob out of their ass...I'm mainly speaking of my boss and people I work with. No wonder they left nearly 300 years ago to go live in an unknown land full of disease and famine. I'll take disease and famine over those insufferable boors any day. There is no alternative to anything with them in the professional world...tunnel vision all the time. Let's not stray a little bit from a dumbass tradition that is getting us nowhere, let's just keep walking into the door without maybe trying to turn the knob first. It's the English way...never understood it. Of course the younger generations are just like anyone else in the world, but occasionally you'll catch some old pompous fart every now and then that just drives you nuts.

so my Linguistics prof made an English grammar error today in her powerpoint on syntax, saying "Who is she giving it to?" when properly it should be "To Whom are you giving it?" but I didn't say anything because I know that I'd get smacked down because Linguistics people are all dirty language communists.

Damn right. Holy shit, dude. "Who is she giving it to?" is very common in the English language, but completely wrong. As you said, "To whom are you giving it?" is correct...I would expect it from someone else and even me because I'm guilty of it because it's such an overlooked mistake. But a linguistics professor? Shame, shame.

oh wait, now I remember, I got it wrong. It was supposed to be "Whom are you giving it to" not "To Whom" as I previously said.

whereas she said "WHO are you giving it to"

WHAT PEOPLE WILL JOIN ME ON MY SOLIDARITY MISSION FOR THE PROPER GRAMMATICAL USAGE OF WHO VS. WHOM?
