Ok I can get a Jam Lab for cheap and need to know if this device can be used without problems as a Pro Tools dongle since I would be running a firepod as a main interface.

thanks!

I know that and JamLab is from M-Audio.

I'm just interested to know if using it as a dongle to only run PT and using another device (firepod) as main interface works without any issues.

thanks anyway

You won't be able to use any interface with Pro Tools M-Powered other than M-Audio interfaces.

Crap. I've been thinking of getting an M-Audio interface to use as a PT dongle just to learn it, since I've never touched ProTools in my life. I guess I'll have to use it just for mixing and editing, then :/ What would you guys recommend for a really cheap-ass interface for M-Powered?

Yes, I am aware that the JamLab is from M-Audio and I plan to get one myself for mobile editing purposes, however, understand that my original post still holds true - you cannot use ANY interface with Pro Tools M-Powered other than M-Audio interfaces, so you won't be able to use the FirePod with Pro Tools, ever, even if you spent $120,000 on an HD rig with an Icon console as your "dongle", you still couldn't!

Welcome to the wonderful world of Avid/Digidesign/M-Audio.

For an inexpensive interface, get the M-Audio Firewire Solo...it's basically just 2 in and out, but it lets you use M-Powered to play with it...if you want to do more, they have the 1814...but for cheap, get the Solo...you can at least play and learn it.

The only reason why I will invest in some crappy M-audio is because of Beat Detective and curiosity towards pro-tools...

The "wonderful" world of Digidesign is not for me... Paying insane prices for interfaces when we only should be paying for the software pisses me off.

thanks anyway.

Thanks. I had already checked some more simple interfaces.

Actually the M-Audio interfaces are really reasonably priced and kickass, especially the ProjectMix I/O (tons for your money there!)

I hated Digidesign for a long time for similar reasons, but the fact is now that they have the best platform out there. I have used everything else and am pretty advanced on all the major platforms and I have to say that Pro Tools has (very recently) passed up the competition, hence I am making the switch I NEVER thought I would make.

I gotta be honest Kazrog, I find it hard to believe something with 8 pre's, a fully motorized control surface, and PT compatibility for only $1100 wouldn't make some serious sacrifices in quality (specifically converter/preamp). This is only cautious speculation, naturally, but when you compare it to, say, your old 828mkII, which is $800 for only two preamps and zero control surface stuff, I find it hard to believe another $300 would cover 6 more pres and a full set of motorized faders, transport controls, etc. Not a direct comparison, obviously, but the best I could think of...

A better comparison is something like the PreSonus Firepod/FP10 (which goes for $500 for 8 XLR preamps.) The 828mkII is actually a really diverse interface in that it has tons of 1/4" ins/outs and other weird features such as being a standalone analog rack mixer. It's not priced the best, either, compared to many of its competitors, and MOTU's pres are notoriously boring for the price.

Hey again!

I was talking digidesign interfaces there, but the m-audio ones in terms of price are ok, so I agree with you.

Maybe when I can test drive pro-tools for real I'll cross to the darkside:u-huh:

You could grab something like a 2496 or 1010LT (good cards in their own right) and use the S/PDIF out from the Firepod into it. Not as versatile and useful as a full Firepod, but it's something.
