Probably a really dumb question about Andy's C4 settings...

So, I have Andy's C4 settings and have the plug in on all my guitars...But, I have one question. When using this setting, the volume of the guitar tracks decreases, no doubt due to the compression in the low mids. Does it make a difference if I account for the volume drop by running the fader higher, or should I make up the gain with the C4's output level (which is currently at 0.00dB)

Do you have the other bands bypassed?

Its more of a personal prefrence on how you want it.....some will even arguee that you can hear the diffrence between the two....I personally make the diffrence up with he plug-in.....

yes, the only one working is the low mids. I used Andy's preset, well, based off the pic that was posted.

Then you have it setup correct....."based on his pics"....of course you should always adjust to you needs....

I can't hear a difference either way, so I thought I'd ask.

Thanks!

A diffrenece with how you bring the level back up?

That is an on going argument...some claim you can hear the diffrence some don't....

I know I can hear a diffrence so I recommend trying both and find out what is best for you....

What are you monitering on?

I can't really hear a difference in the "compensated" volume increase, if that makes sense. I can up the fader, or up the output gain in the plug in. To my ears, it sounds pretty much the same. If I had to choose, I like upping the gain in C4 better, but I don't know why...Probably psychological.

As for monitors, I really don't have any. I use some Sennheiser headphones, can't remember the type, and I have some cheapo AKG K-55's I use sometimes as well, but I prefer the Sennheisers. As far as actual "monitors" go, the closest I get to the real deal is a set of Sony Hi Fi bookshelf speakers powered by a Sony receiver. I run the monitor signal from my Firepod into the receiver and out to the speakers and my computer sub.

My "home studio" is definitely ghetto. But, I think it's sounding good so far!

That would account for why you can't hear the diffrence......but it really is not the big of a diffrence and to be honest it might be my head playing games with me....but I am almost positive I hear something going on....

Probably so. For me, the true litmus test is to listen in my car, and the tracks are sounding pretty good. Of course, I'd love to get monitors, but financially it isn't something I'll be getting soon, if ever. I'm just a hobbyist, and the setup I have now is beyond reasonable for me, and to my ears sounds pretty decent. However, I know I'd be salivating to hear my mixes on a real monitor setup.

Money sucks! So many things have to come one at a time. Took forever to get the Firepod, now I need to wait for monitors! :yell:

Well it only gets worse....as your ears get better you will want more.....what sounds good a month ago will start sounding like shit.....hahahaha you got to love it....

Yeah, I'm the fat dude and the only guitar player. I loooove the Vipers. Before, I played Horizons and H series LTD's and I liked them, but the Vipers fit me better. Being a big dude, the wider, more stout Viper body "fits" me better and offers better playability during live shows without the feeling that I'm going to break the thing. I also have a sunburst one that I think sounds a little thicker than the white one, and I also owned a STBC one at one point that I used for std tuning stuff. Great guitars for the money. I'd love to get a custom shop Viper made. Flat top, arctic white with black binding, single 81, one volume control, string thru, ebony board with no inlays...someday!

Fucking hell....I could not ask for more in a guitar.....that is my dream guitar to the T

Haha, I really like the new flat top Viper that is coming out for '06. Bad thing is, I think it's a sig model for one of the dudes from Atreyu. It has a Floyd on it and 2 p/ups (and a gold top), but you can get a feel for the flat top design for the Viper. For that body style, the flat top with binding looks really nice to me. I'd love to see it on an Arctic white axe with black binding.

Anyway, back on topic...

After some more mixing, I think the C4 is compressing a bit too much for my tone, so I'm going to ease up a bit, if I can.

Also, I'm cutting everything above 12K, but I still get some fizz and the C4 seems to bring that out more when the low mids are compressed.

Do you guys cut it at a lower frequency? I may try 10K tonight when I get home.

I'm using a 6505+ into a Mesa recto std. 4x12 (the big one).

Try moving your mic if you're still getting fizz, I personally low-pass at 10k but with a 6505->Mesa 4x12 set-up I wouldn't expect to get 'fizz' between 10-12k.

I'll setting the LPF at 10K. I'm afraid to move the mic anymore to the outside of the cone. I'm at the point where it starts to get a tad too dark and bassy any farther out. The "fizz" isn't really bad, but I guess I just notice it more with the C4 running. I may ease up a bit on it, anyway.
