problem with natural toms of my drum

I wouldn't say moongels are for killing sustain, but rather for controlling unpleasant overtones. I normally use a half or even quarter of a moongel just to kill off the horrible ringy stuff that I can't tune out of the drum.

When you have a fast tom fill going through an already dense arrangement, sustain is not your friend. Boom city!

I don't agree. I sometimes boost the sustain with a transient designer.

To the OP - I'd tune your drum lower than that. Go to the Evans website - that's pretty much the way I tune drums.

I disagree. If you don't have any sustain the only thing you'll hear is the attack and it will sound like shit, adn you wont get any good tom sound without samples.

I guess its all relative to how the drums tuned and mic'd. Im doing a project right now where no moongels were used on the toms and im having a hard time getting them to cut through without the low end of the drum taking over.

This is what I do too. The trick is not to remove sustain, the trick is to tune the drum properly(+ fresh heads and great drummer) to get the right sustain and tone.
