Even if you don't play this game (I doubt anyone does), can anyone give me advice on the following:

I'm playing Championship Manager 3, and in the last few days it's taken to exiting the game for no apparent reason when I try to proceed. I therefore uninstalled the game, and reinstalled it, in the hope that it would fix it up. Now when I try to load the game I get a popup which says "Sorry, not supported on Windows NT". I'm using Windows XP! It's giving me the shits - what do I do???!!!

I cant help more than to say that XP sometimes has some issues with certain games, check the site of the game and see if theres a patch for it :)

It's an old game, so I doubt there'd be any patch....none that I've seen anyway. It's been superseded once or twice already. CM4 is coming out within the next month or so, but I won't be able to afford to buy it for a bit. :(

Ahh you might be wrong Winmar, a lot of games had trouble with XP so there very well may be one :D

Check for a patch, but if there's none, try this instead:

Find the exe file.
Right click it and choose properties.
There should be a "compatibility" tab on the resulting window.
Check the checkbox that says "Run this program in compatibility mode"
Select as appropriate from the drop down list.
Hit "apply" and then "OK"
Run the game and enjoy Championship Manager goodness.

It should be noted at this point that I have never, ever, ever had this fix anything at all for me. If it hasn't run properly it hasn't run at all, but at least it's something to try.

And another question, is it a DOS game or a Windows game? If it's a DOS game you can just get some bootdisks.

Windows XP support statement

You may not have any problem running any game published by Eidos Interactive using Windows XP. There are a few things that we want you to be aware.

Many of our games were developed for Windows 95/98 long before the release of Windows XP.

Many of our games were developed using the DirectX API. While Windows XP does support DirectX, many hardware manufacturers may not have drivers that support the version that is included with Windows XP. It is common that some hardware drivers have not been brought up to the WHQL specifications required for Windows XP. Thus games that use DirectX will not function correctly or at all.

We can only warrant and support our products when they are run using the operating system for which they were designed. These specifications are clearly listed on the product packaging or at our web site

Older DOS games (Such as Tomb Raider) will not function and are not supported.

Ultimately, it is the responsibility of Microsoft and/or specific hardware manufacturer to provide for backward compatibility with Windows XP; this is to insure that the device drivers are compatible.

At this time we do not have plans to change our older titles to make them Windows XP compatible for the reasons above. We realize this may be a problem for some users. If you have Windows XP on your machine, and the game will not function, your best course of action may be to return the game to the place of purchase.

Thanks fellas. This is a pain in the arse! It's a Windows game.... The thing is though, it was working fine for a while. It was just a few days ago that it started buggering up. Any idea why?

yeah i had issues with games a while back
and all i had to do was change the compatibility, which is what phlog suggested, that should work

I would find Direct x 8.1 or later - NT sucks with games and Xp uses NT bits n pieces.

I found getting an updated Graphics Driver helped me play some games.

That 95 Compatible idea is a good one to try too !

Good luck.

Actually Winmar, I've just had a thought pop into my head. Is the error from the game, or from windows itself? If it's from the game, no amount of windows patching will do any good because it means the game is querying the OS. The only way to fix it will be be to get XP to tell the game that it's not actually XP/NT, and I think that's what the compatibility option I mentioned above tries to do.

I have that game somewhere!

I ran it successfully on XP without any problems - except for one dealing with virtual memory when I first installed it. I had it going for ages and it never crapped out on me. I might have just been extremely lucky :)

The game was fine on Windows 95 (and maybe 98), which I used to play it on. It's on Cd....original....so there shouldn't be anything wrong with it.

I've installed nothing in the last few days. Someone else in my family downloaded a game called Super Collapse - I dunno if that would have made a difference! I assume if the error was with the game, it wouldn't have worked from the outset. It was working fine though, until it decided to hate me the other day.

I tried the compatability thing, and it just gave me an error, and asked if I wanted to send an error report to microsoft. :(

I bet support people love answers like that.

"What have you installed lately?"
"Nothing"
"Really? OK then, try this instead"
...
20 minutes later.
...
"My dad installed <program> yesterday. And mum installed <other program> the other day. And my brother put all these porn things on the day before. Do you think it could be one of those?"
"You told me you hadn't installed anything"
"I haven't."

I installed nothing - and I assume Super Collapse wasn't the cause of CM3's very own super collapse! Nothing's been installed other than that, as far as I know. I tried the compatability thing before SC was put on the computer anyway.
