Prog music is....

Most of it makes me feel like having a snooze - prog rock much more than prog metal. If you suffer from insomnia, then I strongly recommend "Yessongs" by Yes ("Yesshows", on the other hand, is one of the all-time great live albums ever). Oh, and "Seconds Out" by Genesis will certainly keep you comatose as well :)

It does have a few snoozy bits here and there, but some prog songs (eg Xanadu by Rush) are jaw droppingly brilliant IMHO.

Did you know that progressive rock is so named because all the bands start off playing one chord, then it's a good twenty minutes before they progress to a second?

I'm sick of people calling Rush prog. They might be a little bit prog, but nothing like the other prog bands of the 70s... and they sure haven't been prog since the early 80s.

I didn't say they were prog, but they do have their proggy moments. Probably comes from being rather more literate than some of their contemporaries, and thus wanting to write songs about Mighty Kublai Khan (Xanadu) and Ayn Rand's Anthem (2112).

Yeah, I know you didn't say that they were, but I had been thinking about it since this thread started and decided to address it :)

Oh, and Anthem is on Fly By Night (I think), not 2112 :)

Yeah, but the song 2112 was Neil Peart's version of the dystopian society that we see in Anthem the book. Anthem the song, on the other hand, was inspired by The Culture of Selfishness (also Ayn Rand). Must read some more of her stuff one day :).

Like all forms of music, prog can be great.
Like all forms of music, prog can really blow.
