The Arse End Of The Planet
Just wondered what everyone will expect from the next In Flames album (yes, I know it's likely 2-3 years away, but what the hell?)

I expect that either one of three things happens in regards to their sound.

1 - They will get softer and more mallcore. If this happens, I'm out.

2 - They will react to being called soft and go back to their roots slightly and we'll end up with something like Colony, but with more of a nu-metal chug incorporated into the sound.

3 - STYE pt2. Ugh...

So in all, I don't really have high hopes for the future of In Flames. It would be a mistake for the band to deliberately go back to recreate the past, but I just can't remain interested if they keep going down the current avenue that they have been.

The new IF album should be in 2005 if history serves us right.
They always release two albums back to back every other album.

Lunar Strain
Jester Race 94/95

Whoracle - 97

Colony
Clayman - 99/00

Reroute to Remain 02

Soundtrack to Your Escape
????? 04/05

Or like in 03, they could give us an new EP in 05 which is much more likely than a new album.

Regain reissued Lunar Strain and Subterranean earlier this year. I saw them in shops a couple of times but haven't seen much of them. I guess they didn't make very many, they were poorly distributed, or a combination of both.

As for the next album, it'll rock, like all their others. Anyone hoping for a "return to form" will be disappointed (again), and anyone who has enjoyed their last 2 albums will be pleased.

Agreed.

That's why most In Flames fans hate they're last two albums, because they compare and judge them according to what In Flames has done in the past. If you listen to them with an open mind and look at them for what they are, both are fantastic albums.

Sorry, I can't agree that they're fantastic. I'm an open-minded listener, but I find the last two to be lacklustre albums. I didn't actually mind RTR too much, but the second half in was rather forgettable. STYE was mediocre at best.

Most old In Flames fans don't like the new stuff because basically, they are a different band these days. Despite the fact that the line-up is the same as Colony, the sound and approach of the band is utterly different, and the sounds that they make now don't appeal to the ears of many of their old fanbase.

It is only natural to compare items which bear the same tag, and these new items don't measure up to the past in the eyes of old school fans.

A lot has to do with the inlfluences. I like melodic death metal, but I can't say that I like either nu metal or metalcore, so naturally, I was never going to like the new stuff as much. But still, with the ability that the band has, I held on though RTR, endured STYE and am still interested in their future, so they must still be doing something right.

Yep, I agree up to a point, although I want to argue slightly.

I don't think the last two albums have been lacklustre at all. I DO think, though, that the style is different enough to alienate older fans. Simply put, some fans of older In Flames are just not interested in the sort of music that In Flames play now. It isn't really a case of being open-minded or not, although I suppose that may come into it for a few people... it's just that, to a lot of older fans, the new style just doesn't give them what they want to hear. For someone like me the new style is just as enjoyable as the old, even though some of the ingredients have changed. But I think that RTR and STYE are great albums in their own right, it's just that some of the people whose interests are rooted in IF's old days are not likely to agree because they just don't like it. And hell, that's fair enough. As long as they keep putting out albums, I'm happy. I'll leave everyone else to it.
