Hey guys,

I'd like to know how you do your punch-ins in pro tools 8 when you record drums...I suppose it isn't possible to punch-in in the middle of a riff like with a guitar? I suppose you only punch when there is a pause in the song?

Let's say you want to punch-in at 0:16:

Would it be possible or you would just record another take from the beginning?

Thanks a lot!

it can be done. but is tricky.
there are two ways.
either the drummer finishes the section the way he starts the new one and lets the cymbals fade out, then starts the new section, say 2 bars later.
or have him play along to the begining with inout monitoring off, with pre roll before the drop in so you hear the old take, then when it gets to the punch in HOPEFULLY he'll be doing the right thing and the sections will edit together seamlessly.

i prefer option b, but this relies on the drummer playing the same thing every time; which for some inexplicable reason some drummers can't fucking do

Yup.

I just have the drummer play along to himself and the punch is setup to immediately record at a spot I designate. So I would set it to automatically begin recording at 0:16 (really I, and I think most others, use bars/beats so it would be like bar 6 or something), hit play from way before and he jumps in and plays along and then it just starts recording on the 1st beat and he keeps going.

As long as he plays the same thing, mainly the cymbals, then it should be easy to splice them together and crossfade so it's seamless.

I don't use PT so I don't know how this is done in there but I think greyskull covered it.

have quickpunch on...
start lets say 4 bars before the part, make him play along as soon as he knows where he is, at least 2 bars before the part.
then xrossfade and drag the fade before a transient to where it sounds best.

yeh, I never have any problems with just giving them enough pre-roll and getting them to play along. I always make sure the cross fade is before any transients

or just make him finish the take and record a second take and later do a comp track. i always try to have multiple takes so i can do this.
