Personally, I think infants look like aliens. Ugly until they are about a year old, and most of them just stay ugly lol. Comments?

that's the right explanation, jax. i'd add that "cuteness" is a natural way to say "i'm not dangerous/ i'm not an enemy" when young human beings/animals aren't able to defend themselves from others, while when you get the power and look for respect, being ugly often becomes an advantage...
