So, up until this point, I've been pretty much just recording for myself as a somewhat hobbyist. Last weekend I got a call from a friend to do some recording work for a band that he owed a favor. So, I did it as a favor for him as well. I figured it would be a nice learning experience. It was a learning experience, but it wasn't nice.... anyway that's a rant for a different thread, but I will say that the band "needed" the mixes done about 6 waking hours after I finished tracking the vocals. So, I sent them this the next day:

dp1.mp3

I really wasn't happy with a lot of the mix, the guitars were recorded straight from the amp. I have DIs, but didn't have time to reamp. Anyway, I've come back a handful of days later to try to give the mix another shot with a little editing. Today, I came up with this:

dp1v2.mp3

edit: wav files are a little big... I uploaded mp3s and updated the links. Thanks for checking it out!

I think I actually regressed a little. Anyway, please give them a listen and let me know what you think I could do to fix this mix. Your comments would be much appreciated.

Honestly, the guitars were a lot better in the first one.
That bass intro, there's some frequency that's really up front, and not in a good way. It's somewhere in the low frequencies.
Everything else sounds nice.

Hey, man, thanks for the reply, I am going back to the guitars on the first try and I'm going to take a good listen to bass in general to see if I can clean up the lowend a bit.

Ok, I messed with the lowend of the bass. It just seems like no matter what I do, it sounds worse. Could it be that I've lowpassed most of the high end of my clean bass track? The dirty bass track kicks in with the rest of the mix.

Also, I know this isn't the best tracking that everyone has heard, but is there any interest in some stems and bass/guitar DIs?
