Question About Spotify

Okay, so I have a pretty good sized playlist that I made in Spotify, some big metal bands, some small metal bands etc... My question is, does the Label/band suppose to earn something(even if it's just a tiny bit) every time I play the song? no matter how many times I play it? or do they only earn the first time I play the song? I'm also a paying Spotify customer. I'm not sure if that matters or not.

My guess would be they pay a flat rate to the publishing companies, and based on the number of plays (if they track it) they pay out accordingly. Kind of like your local bar with a jukebox or any venue but on a different scale.

Why not just do like Netflix and Hulu and just acquire the rights? the MPAA is SO far ahead of the RIAA at making the internet work for them.
