Question About TS Sims.

I really like the Lecto, and found that Ignite's new TS sim compliments it very well, but, in order to get a good tone, I have to put a Simulog TS/SD-1 in front of it or else it's just too wooly/fuzzy sounding. I set the the Simulog with the gain and level at zero and the tone at 10. Doing this makes the tone much clearer and tighter than if I just use Ignite's TS sim alone.

Anyone familiar w/ how TS sims work/affect tone know why this is?

Thats weird... I tried a few tracks with the added simuanalog settings you mentioned and I didn't quite like the effect at all, it kinda feels like you're killing the body of the tone and choking it off a bit as if you had a noise suppressor set too high or something. Just for reference, I was able to get a very similar tone on by cranking the tone knob on the TS999 and dropping the input to ~.018 (i took off the GUI in reaper to tweak it, basically with the level it would be almost all the way to the left).

Are you putting on a cab impulse after Lecto?

The chain is,

Guitar> GuitarPort> Simulog SD-1> Ignite TS> Lecto> LeCab w/ a Own Hammer IR L chan/ReCabinet IR R chan> EQ w/ HP:100/LP:10K

Just using the SD-1, the tone lacks muscle. W/ the Ignite, it has plenty of gain, but it sounding almost like a fuzz pedal when I push it. Then one day, by accident, I left the SD-1 on in my chain (It was in front of the Ignite TS sim.). To my surprise, it sounded pretty good. The tone now had the definition I wanted and the amount of gain I was looking for.

Weird though, that when I try this chain w/ other amp sims it sounds kind of crappy, but w/ the Lecto, really good.

I'll post a clip tomorrow.

could you also post some short di clips along with some screenies of your settings? Maybe it's some other settings you are using that are making it sound better, but when I tried it by simply adding it to my chain I didn't get results that I would consider "better".

The "usual" approach to Tube Screamers for metal is to keep the gain low (like, 2 or 3 tops), tone just enough above halfway to give you some bite, and the level at half unless you actually need it to boost the amp. Pushing an overdrive pedal is going to get fuzzy, plain and simple.

Here's a quick tone test I did using the two different TS sims. Riff is from the Celtic Frost song Visons of Mortality.

With just the SD-1 sim,

With just the IGNITE,

With both the SD-1 and IGNITE sims,

The individual SD-1 and IGNITE clips aren't representative of the best settings I got for each sim. They are merely the isolated clips of the settings I use in combination.

As I said previously, neither TS was getting me the kind of tone I was after, but combined, they got me a lot closer than I had been getting previously.

Also, this only seems to work w/ the Lecto for some reason. Anyways, I pretty happy w/ the tone I'm getting now, so I think I'll stop my obsessive knob turning for awhile until I can get a better interface to record w/.

Cyril_V,

Here's the screenshots of the chain I'm using,

EQ same setting as above.

IRs are left channel OwnHammer Mills 4X12, and the right is a ReCabinet Ghandi 6L6 121.

Guitar is an Agile 828 Intrepid w/ stock pups. I tried this tone w/ a cheap 7 string Schecter w/ a BKP ceramic Warpig in the bridge and it sounded very good. Still debating as to whether I'm going to replace the stock pup in the Agile w/ a Warpig.

I had those Agile 8 pups for a while and those things definitely need a little bit too much of a kick to get them going as they're very cold IMO.

Anyways, I think maybe all the fuzz you are getting might be because you have every possible gain, input and volume maxed on every vst. I've never gotten a tone like your VoMIGNITE.mp3 by just adding a TS. I do agree that your simuanalog stuff does seem to be helping, but basically I think it is the fact that you have it killing some output by having the Level down to '0', and thats maybe why it's helping you.. I would just drop some of that output on the TS999, Lecto, and LeCab and see if that helps you out.

Most assuredly it is this.

No gain on the TS, around halfway on the Lecto.

I had tried both TS sims independently, but neither one was really giving me the tone I wanted by itself. The chain I'm using now is sort of convoluted, but it is giving me pretty much the sound I'd been trying to get for awhile and couldn't w/ other sim/IR combos.

As for the Agile stock pups, I don't think they're bad, but they are a little "scratchy" sounding, if that makes sense. If I do replace them, I think it'll be w/ a BKP. Most probably a ceramic Warpig, a Miracle Man, or a Black Dog.

How about posting a completely dry DI clip? It could always be your original guitar tone that's making the difference.

I'm actually happy w/ the tone I finally got using the two TS sims. I do need to fine tune it, but, as it is now, I'm happy enough w/ it to keep it pretty much as is.

What I was just curious about was what the Simulog SD-1 was doing to the IGNITE TS sim when chained the way I have it.

You are taking off a bunch of output/input (however you want to look at it) and increasing the attack of the tone, kinda boosts the higher frequencies and maybe tames a bit of the lower frequencies. Thats what it sounds like to me anyways, but I am not, by any means, an authority on anything though.
