This years will be my first progpower show and I was wondering, what is the area around the venue like? Thank you.

The area around the venue is full of hotels. It's on a busy street but walking to and from hotels isn't bad at all. It's not that far from the Marta station (if you are flying in) and there are quite a few resturants and gas stations around so you don't really need a car.

It's a fairly safe area to be in, I feel safe walking with a small group or even just one other person at night. During the day, I have no problem walking alone.

Is that what you are looking for?

I've been attending PP for a few years now and have found the area around the venue to be pretty easy to find your way around. There are plenty of hotels and restaurants nearby. A lot of folks stay at the Residence or Granada. These are closest to the venue and are where most of the parties seem to be. This year, we're staying at the Super 8, which is a half-mile up the street from the venue. It's about a half-mile from Casa Grande, which has awesome Mexican food! Highly recommended! There will probably be some pre-show lunches organized by people on the forum for Thursday and Friday - a good way to meet people. There's lots of parking nearby too, so if you're driving, you won't have trouble finding a place.

The area is regularly filled with Nuclear Ants the size of small busses who broadcast rap filled hate messages out of their super antenna's. Sometimes, the crackwhores are called in to do battle with these acient enemies of the deep, and an all out showdown is unavoidable.

Aside from that, if you're not familiar with the area, you'll probably feel like a mouse in a science maze. Once you get the layout, you'll be fine though.

The ants swim now too? When did this happen? o_O

Thanks for telling him that. Now we're not going to be able to scavange off his remains for dinner.

The ants learned how to swim right around the time of dread, wherein we saw the hobo revolution. Due to the fact that hobo's are well known for their under water cunning (they always complain about being 'dry'), it's only safe to assume that they recruited the giant ants as war machine mounts.

Alas, Metal, we can still plan on eating heartily, because he can't possibly know about the sub atomic blasting rays of the mighty AXE. Armed with only a can of deoderant, you can drive away said creepy crawlies. But we'll never tell him that.

Massive crackheads and drug dealers, carry weapons if at all possible....Stay in groups of 10 or more....

oh wait that Brazil, my bad, Atlanta is fine, never had a problem :p:lol:

If you're referring to how safe it is to get from your hotel to the venue, it looks safe to me, and I'm a veteran of bad neighborhoods. I didn't see any signs of danger the two times I went, at least not between the hotel and the venue.

Of course, that doesn't mean it's 100% safe. No area is. But it's probably as safe as wherever you live.

The venue (Center Stage, formerly Earthlink Live, and a ton of other names) is an older place. It could use some remodeling, but overall its in pretty good shape, considering its old (I'd have to guess its around 35 to 40 years old).

It is in an area called "Midtown", which is just north of downtown. Its not a bad section of town, and you can walk around a night and not worry about it too much.

The Best Western Granada is just south of the venue about a block or so (that's where the bands stay). There are a couple of other hotels nearby - but two hotels (Hampton Inn and Fairfield Inn) are no longer there, which cuts down on the places to stay. There aren't that many fast food restaurants nearby (no McDonalds, for example). The Subway restaruant that is near the Residence Inn (a block east of CS) closes early on Saturday afternoon (ugh!). The Super 8 hotel (where Skonopa and I are staying) is about 1/2 mile north. A decent walk but not too bad.

Speaking of Subway - the Atlanta subway (MARTA) is just south of the Granada. If you're flying in - I'd suggest taking the subway to avoid the expense of a rental car or a taxi.

Overall its not the best area, but certainly not the worst area. Overall Atlanta is not bad for a urban environment. I've been there several times and have no problem going back.

last year was my first year and it was simply awesome... the venue was kewl, the hotel was close (I'm still wondering what I'm going to do about that this year!!!) and there's constantly people walking around in that general area during the day...

And above all else, everyone is just KICK ASS!!!

And just an FYI, as the immediate area is more business than pleasure, a lot of the restaurants close around 9 and don't open till around lunch time. The closer to downtown you go, the easier it will be to find food after 8, and the 24-hr chinese place (which should be re-opening here soon) is very good, I highly recommend it for post-prog munchies.

They got nothing on the tricked out cows. I miss the cows.

But yea, like everyone said, it's pretty darn safe as long as you don't do anything stupid like pass out in a dark alley.
