Do you use them at all, and what do you think if you do?
I just bought a new Shure system, and will be trying it out this week.
I was just wondering what your thoughts, or anyone else for that matter, think about them.

I have never used them but I hear good things ( no pun intended )

Let me know how they work out.

on another note, my friend just bought a V-AMP modeller the other day for his home studio, that thing sounds great. It was more than worth the money he paid for it.

I got a great deal on a Fender Passport 250 like 2 years ago, and bought it. Sells for 700, guy sold it to me brand new for 200 so I jumped on it. Not many effects besides reverb, but who needs em. Great sound.

I dont know what to choose between Shure SM58 or SM86.... could be Beta versions aswell but i think Im fine with the regular ones, any indications?

I use the Beta 58 mic. I have always used sm58's, but last year I switched to the Beta. It has a lot more gain, and pressence. The over-all sound quality is also a large improvement over the sm58...the only problem is that it will run you about $100 more than an sm58.

ah thanks! well i'll look forward to test them... and hope that the money will come out of somewhere hehe

I love the beta, but usually in studios and venues the have sm58's due to price and package deals. You can buy an sm bundle pretty cheap these days.

I will also say that my sm58 is being used for backups by my guitarist, and it's still going strong after 10 years of use...that's gettin your monies worth o_O

I felt like starting a million of threads now with the titles:

"Question for Warrel about good sushi places"
"Question to Warrel about good toilet paper kinds"
"Question to Warrel about cotton briefs"

but I was too lazy to actually do it.

The Beta58 is just a supercardioid version of the 58, isn't it? I can definately see the application for live use because of the isolation it would give you. Bit of a problem with supercardioid patterns is that they tend to pick up a bit more from behind than cardioids, so you might get some spill from the crowd, haha.

In studios there's no real point in using Shure gear on vocals. That's a job for the Neumann mics etc.

dude, you are so right about that mike and the EV ND757 I like as well

You know what I really can't stand. Annoying sales guys at music stores.

I was at Guitar Center the other day to help my friend pick up his new studio desk and amps.
So here comes MR.-hardsell-over achiever, " hey dudes, what do you guys play? "
So we both mention what we do...
ANnoying sales guy " right on, right on. What gear do you have? "

So we mention a few things.

Annoying sales guy " oh DUDE. time to upgrade. If you like (blank) this blows it out of the water "
Me " no thanks. I'm not interested in new gear my ( blank ) works fine for what I do"

Annoying guy " oh dude ( does he have to call me dude every single time?) what do you use to record with? "

Me " I have the Roland 1880 "

Annoying guy " Dude, time to get rid of that. have you seen the (blank)? it's way better "

me " no. not interested. I'm just here to pick up something we already bought "
Annoying guy " Dude, what microphones do you use? "

Me " I have ( runs down list )" FYI I have well over a dozen different mics from many manufacturers.
How can Shure, EV, AKG all be bad gear?

Annoying guy " oooooh man, don't use those, have you tried the new ( blank )?"

At this point I walk away from him in mid sentence. :Smug:

everytime I go to one of those stores it's either " right on man. I own two of those" ,no matter what it is and usually " dude, you need the new (blank)"
whatever the hot thing is they are trying to sell this week.

Hmm, that's strange. I normally get the guys being somewhat truthful. I tried out a Vamp2 a few months ago, told the clerk that it sucked balls and he was like 'hahaha, I wholeheartedly agree'. Didn't try to slip in another product on me either. Guess it depends on person to person.

Yeah, some salesmen are dickheads, but some are cool. This one guy at the guitar center I go to, I talk to him for atleast a half hour whenever I go there and he has yet to try and sell me one thing.

And btw, on the mic subject, someone on the dragonforce board recommended me the Sennheiser E835 as an alternative to the sm58 and beta. Great sound, good features for live shows, and supposedly its as indesturctable as the sm58. The salesman let him try it out, chuck it at the ground like 5 times, and then try it once more. Worked perfect, no scratches.
Those German's like to make high endurance shit. I may try one out.
