Hello, Ive been playing guitar for about 5 years off and on ive taught my self the basics and can play minor pentonics and such, I want to start getting serious about practicing and advancing my playing I have the desire I just haven't had the time to play, now im 21 years old and want to start fresh like I am just starting. What would you suggest I go about when making a practice schedule? should i include a bit of everything? a new scale, a few chords, a new song, some theory? What did you do when you were first learning chis? how did you go about organizing what to learn day to day?(I heard you practiced 10 hours a day on multiple instruments) thanks for any reply in advance you have been a big inspiration to me!

Cody.

Yo dude, I'm not Chris, but hopefully I can still be of help ;)

First thing to look at it is how much time in the day do you have to practice. Lets say, between work, school, family/relationship responsibilities, etc. you can only put in 2 hours a day. Decide what areas of guitar study you'd like to devote to those two hours and section it out. Maybe you wanna work on alternate picking exercises, theory knowledge, tapping licks, and transcribing a song. You could evenly disperse these 4 categories and devote a half hour to each, or spend less time on one and more on another, etc. You can also choose to focus more time on one area for a week or two, and rotate it with another area of study.

These are all just general suggestions, ultimately you should find a method of practice that is engaging and fun for you to do. I've also found the more I can spread practicing out throughout the day, the more productive I feel (say instead of practicing for 4 hours straight I did 2 in the morning and 2 at night).

Thanks for the response, this is what I was looking for, Id be glad to see what the other users here do them selfs and Ill take you advice into account and try to plan out what I need the most work on.

In the early days i would do 4 hours a day broken down over the evening after school / work. I would break each hours into 2 segments, Technique and Knowledge.

During the technique portion of the hour I would spend time working on right and left hand stuff, Sweep Picking, Alternate, Economy, Stretches and so on.

During the Knowledge portion i would work on theory, chord building, song writing, Intervals and so forth...

I would also break up my practice sessions over the course of the day. 1 hour right after school, another after dinner, another after TV and then the final one right before bed. i found this makes it more enjoyable and my mind would tend to wander less.

Hope this helps
