I have listed 3 bands for each genre, because I couldn't choose just one for most genres.

Heavy Metal - Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath

black metal: Darkthrone
death metal (old school/trad): Cannibal Corpse
death metal (brutal): Suffocation
death metal (tech death): Atheist
death metal (blackened): Angel Corpse
melodeath: Amon Amarth
thrash (overall): Slayer
thrash (Bay Area): Testament
thrash (German): Sodom
thrash (Brazilian): old Sepultura
doom (traditional): Candlemass
doom (extreme): Mourning Beloveth
gothic: Moonspell
folk: Primordial
prog (not a valid genre, but everyone else has it): Sympony X (or maybe Suck Theater)
grind: Napalm Death (first two)
viking: Bathory
heavy metal: Black Sabbath (IMO not doom metal)
NWOBHM: Iron Maiden
power metal: Helloween

Black: Mayhem
Death: Morbid Angel or earlier Hypocrisy
Gothenburg: Dark Tranquillity
Doom: Reverend Bizarre or Black Sabbath
Traditional: Dio or Judas Priest
Symphonic/Experimental: Urfaust
Viking: Bathory

This is really tough...and I tended to just stick to more 'forefather" bands, because they seem safer to say they epitomize genres, rather than newer bands, which I think more people would disagree with. Even though perhaps I think Tyr is more the epitome of Viking Metal than Bathory was.

Heavy- Iron Maiden
Power- Helloween, Manowar, Blind Guardian
Doom- early Green Carnation (first 2 albums), My Dying Bride
Death- Death, Morbid Angel
Melodic Death- In Flames, Arch Enemy
Brutal Death- Cannibal Corpse
Brutal Melodic Death- Avulsed, Dark Lunacy
Prog Death- Cynic, Atheist, Sadist
Experimental Death- Phlebotomized
Grindcore- Napalm Death
Raw Black- early Burzum and Immortal
Sympho Black- Emperor
Post Black/Experimental Black- Arcturus, Lux Occulta
Thrash- early Sepultura
Speed- Megadeth
Prog Rock- King Crimson
Prog Metal- Spiral Architect

Also, I'm not sure Venom would be a good example of BM. I like their old stuff a lot, but everyone pretty much knows they were more NWOBHM than BM.

Yeah, fair enough. I thought that after I posted actually. Edited accordingly.

Definitely Bathory.

Every music genre has a beginning including BM and that beginning was with Venom... if not the musical style then certainly the term BM as well as other elements adopted by future BM bands (who cited Venom as a major influence)... so in that respects Venom is very old primitive BM imo...
