Ok we all know the metal of the 80's and such well i was thinking... what genera of metal from now adays actually plays metal that is pretty much the metal of back then? i am thinking progressive metal but i could be wrong!! lol how bout you guys?

What does it prove if it mattered? Metal didn't evolve linearly, it branched out into many genres at the same time. All forms of modern metal are equally legitimate in terms of their roots.

Well thats not what i meant... i really really like the old 80's metal (tho i dont listen to them much i like it alot) i was just trying to figure out what genera of metal that i around today still sounds like the metal of the 80's thats all.

If you mean in the vein of 80's metal there is a ton. Toxic Holocaust, Abigail, Darkthrone, Proclamation, Nunslaughter, Victimizer and so much more recent bands are playing music than hails the 80's sound. Nec would be the best to tell you of some stuff though.

I find sometimes it varies even from riff to riff in a band. Some songs have thrashy influences in their hooks and rhythms weather or not they are entirely based on that genre. There are a lot of bands that purposefully try to emulate thrash and old school metal many of which are really good. Really when you think about it , the old genres never really died out.

I just saw a really good local thrash metal band yesterday, they are called Satyriasis if you wanna check 'em out on myspace. The songs on their profile dont do justice to their live sound, they are just so fast. Brutal isnt usually a word I apply to thrash, but seeing them live was brutal as fuck.

As for bands Edguy maybe cause they have like a whole Helloween power metal and Glam rock sort of sound now. Also maybe something like Municipal Waste?

The non-metal listener and the untrained ear might think that most power metal sounds like 80's metal at first listen, I've heard it said before.

I meant similar to the old metal in sound.

Well this is a "durp" answer but I'd say the most 80s sounding material is coming out bands like Priest, Exodus, etc. who were the ones making that 80s metal in the first place. It's just like with Classic Rock, I can't find any bands that honestly sound like Classic Rock other than new releases from people like Neil Young and Tom Petty.
