I'm new here so forgive me if this has been done before, if so point me in the right direction and ignore my question. Yesterday i had been talking to a friend about metal, when he said that As I Lay Dying was a death metal band. I might be wrong but i told him that they weren't because i'm pretty sure has lyrics about death and murder and such. Anyways, my question is what exactly makes death metal "DEATH METAL"?

Gutteral vocals, aggressive guitars, fast, sometimes technical drumming which can incorporate blastbeats and heavy grooving. But most of these guidlines can be tweaked and modified to create a unique style.

No matter how many silly explanations you come up with, the CORRECT quality that separates death metal from all other genres is its variety and technicality in terms of rhythm (drumming and bass, that is). You will never see a black metal band play technically, because then it would be death metal (logically)...all (ALL) death metal bands incorporate rhythmic switches in their songs. Other, (slightly) less stable qualities may include tremolo riffing (not always used, for instance, slams are used in a lot of brutal death), blastbeats (plenty of death metal is slow), etc.

What your friend may have mistakenly thought was that since As I Lay Dying stole their riffs from In Flames, a melodeath band, that they too were a death metal band. Sadly he was mistaken. Death metal at its loosest mainly incorporates rythmic changes, growled vocals, and technical drumming.

AILD are not Death metal, they are 'Dying Metal' the precursor to Detah Metal

I've also had this problem, with AILD, no less. And I'm pretty sure AILD is NOT death metal. Nor anywhere close.
