Yesterday i had been talking to a friend about metal, when he said that As I Lay Dying was a death metal band. I might be wrong but i told him that they weren't because i'm pretty sure has lyrics about death and murder and such. Anyways, my question is what exactly makes death metal "DEATH METAL"?

Other, (slightly) less stable qualities may include tremolo riffing (not always used, for instance, slams are used in a lot of brutal death), blastbeats (plenty of death metal is slow), etc.
