Traditional, Extreme, Progressive

"Progressive" isn't a genre.

However, "Prog-" is a genre prefix. Hence, a band can be a "prog" band without actually being progressive in any way. See: Opeth.
 
Nowadays progressive music is usually bands playing rehashed prog rock influenced, technical stuff. Opeth isn't death metal. Don't even say that. None of you.

TRUE progressive music is "avant-garde".

Real progressive music is music that's doing something new and innovative. Just being technical does not equate being progressive, although there are many progressive bands who are technical.
 
Well.....there's the Dream Theater and like bands who are influenced heavily by the classic prog-rock, and then there's the bands that are really progressive.
