Questions for TM

Haha, LoL @ Luke

I'm too lazy to shave most of the time, there's also the fact that i'd have to get up 5 mins earlier in the morning and that sure as hell ain't happening! :Smug:

Question more for Mike than the band. Do you have any major non-prog- and non-power- metal influences as a vocalist? Aside from the obvious ones like Ace of Base and that chick from the old Nescafe ads?

Time to put my "serious" hat on! Read at own risk haha.

Ok, well for years (and still largely to this day) my big thing was mid to late 19th century Italian opera, and my favourites were singers like (theres quite a bit on the web about all these guys): Enrico Caruso*, Jussi Bjorling, Mario Del Monaco, Alfredo Kraus, Lawrence Tibbett, Tito Gobbi, Leonard Warren, and Giuseppe De Luca. Since these guys were the dudes I modelled myself on the couple of years I spent taking vocal lessons and trying to find my own voice, they'd probably be my biggest influences ever. Even today I can put on almost any of their recordings and learn a shitload just from listening to their phrasing, tone, technique etc. My Grandads tapes (he was an opera singer) are great to learn from too.

*On a side note, Enrico Caruso (1873-1921) was the singer for whom the entire recording industry basically started up to accomodate... so he's possibly the most significant recording artist of all time, and probably my favourite singer of all time in any genre.

Apart from the Opera stuff, a fav singer and MASSIVE influence on me is Sandra Nasic from the German band "Guano Apes"... she had a big, big influence on the way I approach singing (the way she sings soft stuff... and the way she changes her tone so easily to express different emotions... WOW).

Ian Gillan was another big influence... Glenn Hughes also (duh)... Paul Rodgers from Bad Company/Free at least early on... Michael Crawford too since I grew up with a lot of the Andrew Lloyd Webber type musical stuff around.

These days its singers like Jack Bruce (Cream), Jon Anderson (Yes), Ian Anderson (Jethro Tull), Layne Staley (Alice in Chains...RIP), Billie Holiday, Eva Cassidy, and even Tori Amos, who I'm a huge fan of. It's funny, but apart from a few guys like Arch, Tate, Labrie, Conklin and Matos (who are all heros of mine), I wouldn't say there are really any Powermetal or Prog singers I would consider myself influenced by... doesn't mean I don't enjoy listening to them... but enjoying music/singing and actually being inspired and feeling like you're learning something from it are two different things IMO, and The bigger part of my influence is definately outside of Prog or Powermetal.
