Quick thoughts on some upcoming albums

anyway that is very unexpected news

i always liked hate forest for the most part and for me "purity" and "battlefields" have stood up better over time than the drudkh stuff that everyone loses their shit over

EDIT: yeah i think this rules

Autumn Aurora stands the test of time, but I have really struggled to give a damn about the rest of their catalog after all these years.

I still dig all of their stuff up until and including Estrangement, that's one string of solid albums that stands as a cohesive legacy. Eternal Turn of the Wheel is actually better than the RYM rating makes it out to be but is kinda buried within the weak half of their career.

As to Hate Forest, Purity is my fave, just half a nose ahead of everything else they've released, hopefully including the new one.

I will have to give Hate Forests stuff another go. I love Battlefields and is the only one I have. I just remember half of it being blurry speedy black metal and the other half being ambient pieces I think.

This was probably more than 10 years ago so Im probably wrong

Autumn Aurora and Blood in Our Wells remain my jam. AA for the ambience, and just such an amazing flow of an Album from start to finish. BiOW for the guitar heroics, somehow adding that Fun to their sound doesn't detract from the mood. Haven't enjoyed much since Estrangement though, and they pretty much lost me at Handful of Stars. But when they were good... damn.

I too need to spend more time with Hate Forest. I fucking love Battlefields but don't listen to it terribly often. Although I think I was painfully addicted to it for a few months about 15 years ago? That ending is unreal.

yeah, you're a little bit wrong. "battlefields" is the outlier in their discography precisely BECAUSE it is not fast for the most part

it's more slow and brooding and is punctuated by sorrowful-sounding babushkas singing traditional folk songs

"purity" is speedy pretty much the whole way through, as is most of their other material, but "purity" to me is the, ahem, purest and best expression of that style

Purity is a big slab of unfriendly greyness hurtling in straight line in the general direction of wherever things must be subdued. It is definitely a super extreme album even by HF standards, but also remarkably tense and atmospheric in the eye of the rampage.

Pretty pumped for the new Hate Forest. I listen to Purity regularly. You all check out Precambrian? It's hate forest light (cmon it's tectonics instead of a forest), but still pretty damn good.

I still listen to Drudkh a lot, I go in waves where I pretty much listen to their first four albums on repeat.

Listening to the first 3 Drudkh albums the other day, I was surprised by the extent to which I found Forgotten Legends does not hold up vs the other two.

I pretty much agree. But I always thought The Swan Road was quite excellent

And Microcosmos is top 3 Drudkh for me

i really loved forgotten legends back in the day but i agree, it's hard to go back to

i always thought the swan road was bad

I have the first four Drudkh albums waiting for me so we'll see. I use to have Autumn Aurora and enjoyed it. I always preferred Hate Forest. At least Battlefields style Hate Forest because that album is incredible.

Is that the next one after Blood in our Wells? Or before? I bought it in vinyl and did not get into it, may have traded it to someone else from RC eventually.

i stopped caring/buying drudkh albums after being super disappointed in the swan road. although what i heard of blood in our wells was definitely alright, it didn't seem good enough

I think I never gave Blood in our Wells a proper chance and just dismissed it as another Swan Road. I listened to it today and was pretty impressed.

Autumn Aurora = a solitary journey into the wilderness

Blood in Our Wells = two beers after you set up camp
