random musical blabber for a dull monday morn

so before i make my point let me preface it with these facts which i believe to be inarguable:

1. The real "Black Sabbath" is the group with Ozzy singing and all other formations are mostly cheap imitations.

2. Ronnie James Dio is a very short man.

That being said I just want to say that I truly believe that the song "Neon Knights" off of Heaven and Hell is one of the best written up-tempo songs in the history of metal. I mean it never really loses its pace but doesn't seem boring because the parts have their own feel harmonically and dynamically with Tony Iommi varying the texture of the guitar from palm-muted to open and i believe that they change keys a few times in the song giving it a more interesting sound.

Again it really isn't "Black Sabbath" playing it but still I have to say it is one of my favorite songs ever.

Also on tap for today's listening is the first Rainbow album because Ritchie Blackmore is one of my most favoritest guitarists eva and not because i am on a Dio fetish.

I agree completely that without Ozzy it isn't really sabbath. And...Heaven and Hell was easily the finest non ozzy Sab album. it's also instructive to note that it was the first with Dio, before he began a slow decline into formula.

Dio ruled for the little that i saw of his set during the tour with maiden this summer.

also of note, i once was told that he performed a full gig while he was horrifically sick with the flu and even more than that he still did an autogrpah signing afterwards for the devoted fans while he was lying sick in his tour bus and let them in a couple at a time until all fans had gotten their autographs.

that's devotion right there.

3. "Catch the Rainbow" off of the first Rainbow album has parts in it that sound like the same chord changes used in "Little Wing."

yeah I've always heard that Dio does a great show, and that it's indisputable that he's something of a minor legend as far as metal vocalists go.

His showmanship was apparent when I saw him open for Maiden, but it also came across as laughably dated. And Neon Knights is an awesome song...
