Dull guitars rock

Wow, i would have never believed this if I didnt try it. I messed around with my 5150 last night. Settled on th LP at about 7500. It sounds niiiice! Definitely have more room in the mix now.

LP at 7200. Guitars are quadtracked (all hard panned, Krank Rev1 - 5150 - 5150 - Krank Rev1), Krank Rev Cab loaded with V30, single 57. Had instantly much more room in the mix and everything seems to sound smooth (imo).

how about a comparison clip with no lowpass at all and/or lowpass at 10k/12k?

as promised I did a clipfor comparison! it's not the same song as the one I've posted (same band though) but the first take is with the hp filter at 7000 and the second without hp filter. Can't hear much of a difference at home because I'm listening through laptop speakers right now

took the 6600hz slider on my Mark IV and pushed it all the way down. Sounded very dull in the room, but put my ear next to the speaker where the mic would be and it was much a much more pleasant sound. Oddly enough, I plugged in my EMG85 guitar and it sounded 1000x better and I actually enjoyed playing it for once.

I could also hear myself sing a hell of a lot easier without all that high end shit piercing my ears. I think LP'ing so low wont give you a super aggressive metal mix, but it will give you a great round tone for stuff with mostly singing. It also helps with letting a mix not kill your ears when you really crank the volume; like on a car's sound system.

Can't see why having fairly dark sounding guitars would mean you can't get a super aggressive mix.
The Way of All Flesh certainly has fairly dark guitars, but it's a goddamn killer mix. Definitely in the top five of my favorite extreme metal mixes of the 00s.

Sorry for the bump but just wanted to thank Ermz and Harry for this one, getting some much better guitar tones from this approach. Nice to see people thinking outside the box too. Again, very useful, cheers.

I don't like dull sounding guitars... Smooth can be good, particularly for solos, but not dull. It's metal. I want the guitar to have some bite and aggression. As long as the mic'd tone isn't extremely harsh, there's no need to low pass much further than 12Khz

I am thinking, after I did a reamp yesterday that most of the harshness of the highs that is causing most to pass so low is because they are tracking too bright, as I find that because I am tracking pretty dark now, that the highs are not very harsh and you can easily get the highs up with some eq and they grind pretty good and don't need a pass any lower than 12K at most.
