Random thoughts on Kalmah

Since it's being asked, random thoughts after a dozen spins, in order:
1) Would it kill them to come up with an original riff?
2) Someone kill those annoying keyboards - they add nothing and are way to upfront in the mix.
3) What on Earth do we need another Gothenbore/CoBoredom-type band for?
It's not that it's all that bad, it's just average and doesn't add a damn thing to the genre. The list of better bands doesn't stop with Asmodee's...

Nile and Destroyer 666 still beats the shit out of these bands.

Right Krigloch?

I would agree with you,
but as much as I hate Power metal..
***some*** power metal owns.

To be honest... I don't see any place to compare Nile and Destroyer 666
to Kalmah....... :hypno:
I mean, its like comparing almonds to carrots..... really.

yah karen, I also like some power metal bands. Some really stands out from the others, but I would say that 90% of power metal bands sound the same and abord the same lyrical themes. Kalmah isn't really power metal though..... they are more thrash/death metal which is why I compared with D666.

And almonds are better than carrots

errr well considering death metal, black metal, power metal and etc all fall under the metal umbrella, it's pretty hard to say they all abord the same lyrical theme and use the same music structures :err:

No thats not really what I meant. Nearly all bands within each of those genres sound the same and use the same lyrical concepts, gimmicks, whatever etc. I dont think Black Metal, Death Metal, etc. are any less guilty of what power metal is charged with.

well yeah, black metal, if you are a purist of the genre, must follow a single lyrical theme otherwise it's not black metal. But I tend to believe that bands like primordial, nokturnal mortum, woods of ypres, agalloch, morrigan and etc all fall under the black metal umbrella and add some diversity.

In death metal case, I guess it's true they have the same problem as power metal.

Well in power metal you have bands like Angra, Jag Panzer, Blind Guardian, Symphony X, Wuthering Heights, etc. etc. that add diversity to the power metal genre, so whats the point really ?
And just for arguments sake, I would put Primordial or Agalloch under black metal really at all.

1. they have many original riffs. listen to songs like Cloned Insanity, etc.
2. i actually agree that some of the songs, not all...but definitely some, have keyboards that are far too prominent.
3. this is a very stupid question. what on earth do we need another "type" of band for? uh...since when is is a bad thing if a band uses a style that has already been developed. hell, look at thrash metal. there are plenty of kick ass thrash bands that play essentially the same exact music where the only thing that separates bands is riffs. and kalmah have perfected this style and named it "SWAMP METAL!!!"

Kalmah is cool and all but you need to take a few music appreciation courses if you think they are "obviously" more technical than SA.

really? ok, then it might not be "obvious" to some, but it is still a fact that theyre more technically advanced than sonata arctica.

the only thing SA has going for them is tony kakko. that guy knows how to write some kick ass, catchy, amazing vocal lines, which is the bread and butter of SA. playing wise, the guitars arent anything special and the drums aren't all that creative.
