the only thing SA has going for them is tony kakko. that guy knows how to write some kick ass, catchy, amazing vocal lines, which is the bread and butter of SA. playing wise, the guitars arent anything special and the drums aren't all that creative.
Tony Kakko also composed most all of the keyboards on the SA albums as well. Jani is also an excellent guitarist with incredibly smooth technique and a unique taste in his modes of playing. As far as Tomy Portimo, I will agree his drumming is less than extraordinary but I think he is a very solid player. You cant say that its a fact that the guitarist(s) from Kalmah are more technical, because the term technical in this context is subjective. Technical what? The guitar playing seems more complicated to you? If you were to compare the difficulty levels of the two bands guitar playing, you would see that each have compositions that are more complex at times, in a "technical" sense. Personally after seeing SA live twice I was pretty amazed at the fluidity and presicion of Jani's playing abilities.
p.s. I listened to the new Kalmah last night and it was pretty good, I'll have to give it a few more spins.
