Reaper won't play back MIDI...

I have my VSTi for drums with the right key map, but when I import MIDI and try to play it, there's no sound. If I get rid of a note and replace it, it'll play only that note. I'm not sure how to fix this, but any help would be appreciated.

it plays back, but only when I write it, which is a major pain in the ass considering its a 4 minute song that already has midi written

Is it an export from guitar pro? If so, you need to scroll through every CC and make sure there isn't any unnecessary crap in there that does something weird like drop the sampler volume to 0.

Basically, just delete everything that isn't velocity.

If you open the VSTi and let the MIDI play, are the samples being played? That is, are the notes being played and just blocked before they get to Reaper, or are they not being played at all?

If you want, post one of your exported MIDI files for us to look at and see if there's anything silly going on that you might not have noticed.

Ok so I do want to get this working, I checked and the VSTi does not show the notes being hit as I play the MIDI. Any help would be awesome.

yeah I've learned that the hard way haha. Thats not the problem though, because in the midi editor, when I click the note, it plays the snare, but then it doesn't play when I press play...

Shit, I completely forgot that I'd asked you to post that. Sorry for the late reply.

Anyway, it plays fine for me, in Reaper, through Steven Slate/Kontakt, so I'm going to suggest it's either your VSTi or how you've got everything set up.

- What VSTi are you using?

- Are you using multiple tracks in any way, and if so, how are they routed together?

- Are there any effects in the chain prior to the VSTi that might be "eating" the MIDI? If you have the MIDI item on a separate track (I do, so I might as well ask), are there any effects on it?

It's a long shot, and I'd think you'd have done this already but if not here it goes. Options -> Preferences -> MIDI Devices. Set everything to 'On' there. (If you're using Windows, Microsoft GS Wavetable Synth should be set to 'On')

Then on your track, click the I/O button (Above the pan pot), under MIDI Hardware Output, click the drop down box and select 'Microsoft GS..' and hopefully when you play the track again, it'll playback.
