recent interview with Mikael

Great interview, indeed!

Man, there's a great deal of shit out there in the music industry - shit that sells! While Opeth may not be bringing in the cash (from what I have read in the interview), whatever...they sure as hell are the most talented fucking group I have heard. I respect them greatly for creating such awesome music. It's the music - that's all that matters!

We try to put on a show, we do as good as we can....I think that many people mistake us for being roadies or something, because we always put together our gear ourselves, and wave to the audience, so a lot of people think that we are roadies and we just start playing and it's just the four of us - it's no theatrical shows or bombs or naked women or blood or pig heads or anything, just the four of us playing the songs - and that's all that it takes. And that's what people want to see, I think. They don't want to see some long intro with some coffins or us coming out with snakes around or something - it's just going to be the four of us doing our thing.

That was an excellent interview, indeed. Your questions were well-thought-out but not forced. You ad-libbed when necessary.

I loved his remarks about the reissues, but I'm disappointed the band isn't tighter as friends.

Yeah, that's true!

You'd think they would hang out more often - which is what I thought they did....I mean, it seems Mikael and Peter party from time to time...

Thanks! Mikael was very open, frank, and talkative during the interview, so things went very smoothly and we had an enjoyable chat.

The part that I was most surprised by, was when he talked about how the band is actually a bit lazy during the recording process, and would allow mistakes to remain, if they thought that the other band members didn't notice.

Can't wait to hear the new album, too!!

Yeah, I've read him saying that they don't rehearse for shows either!

Unrestrained is my favorite metal magazine  ....for a good reason ...hehehe

Yeah. I think that Unrestrained! is a very good mag...even if I wasn't writing for it, it's one that I would be picking up regularly.

The Opeth interview discussed above first appeared there in article format, in the sixteenth issue. But I had so much more text that, due to space constraints, couldn't fit...so I thought that it would be worthwhile to republish it online, in its original Q&A format. I've also recently done that with the Katatonia interview...and will probably do that with some others as time goes by...

cheers for the interviews dude...nice to get some insights into the way some of these bands write their music...

I just read the interview with Anders from Katatonia and it seems like he has a vastly different writing style...and outlook on music than Mikael...even though they seem like pretty good friends (which is fair enough). Is that how it came accross too you?

Yes, I'm sure that there are probably some differences between the two. I don't think that I could really put a finger on something definite, and of course there are naturally going to be variations from band to band in terms of the creative and recording processes, not to mention individual musical outlooks.

I would wager that there is probably more affinity between Anders and Mikael in terms of general outlook on music, while they probably differ a bit more in terms of their responsibilities within their respective bands.

That's kind of a flimsy response, I guess that I'm not really sure. :)
