Recommend some classy Prog acts

Maybe not because prog-era FW is not similar at all, to Ark, Evergrey or Wolverine.
Yes, because prog-era FW is better than everything Ark, Evergrey or Wolverine ever did.
Buy A Pleasant Shade Of Grey. The definition of "grower", and their best album (generally) i.m.o. . Or maybe you should start with "Perfect Symmetry" which is more traditionallly progressive metal.. i dont know.

Attention Deficit goddammit. Their name is very fitting.

PS: I hate most "prog" metal so I'm probably way off on this recommendation. :)

Yes, the last even contributed to a Fates tribute. Perect Symmetry is the place to start, but I also like Inside Out (Monument is one of my favorite songs ever) and A Pleasant Shade Of Gray a great deal. I also second the Conception, which features Ark's guitarist...In Your Multitude rules. If you like heavy prog with a darker edge, Zero Hour is a sure bet as Doomcifer surely knows. I'd stay away from Spock's Beard, although to their credit they've held back the wank after Neal left (but are still on the bland side IMO)...

...and of course there's Porcupine of Salvation. ::eek:pens can of worms over a toilet, flushes::

Conception - In Your Multitude is fucking awesome! :kickass:

Zero Hour - The Towers of Avarice is the greatest prog METAL album evfuckinger. Last I heard, the lead singer left or something though?? Please fucking correct me if I'm wrong. For some reason, that just popped into my head and I became pissed.

The best Prog ROCK album is Pain of Salvation - Remedy Lane. Once this one catches on, after many spins, you will be immersed with emotion. Read the booklet along with the tunes to get the full effect. I can't really get into the other PoS albums though, besides a great song here and there.

Psychotic Waltz are completely freaking kickass too, as IofTS truly knows.

Of course, you have always got to love the greats like Rush, King Crimson, ELP, Jethro Tull, and more.:worship:

I need to revist Zero Hour. I saw them in 2002 at PPIII and I thought they were too techy for me, but right about now, I'm ready to come back for another try. Doomcifer - you ripped me a CD-R so I'll pull it out. *cough*

I guess I should also just get the other Ark album. Plus maybe check out Masterplan since Jorn Lande has become my favourite vocalist as of late. Wow, that guy just came out the blue for me. Plus he beat up Yngwie Malmsteen's wife which is pretty funny. :tickled:

Attention Deficit punches me in the balls like a 19 year old Mike Tyson! Alex Skolnick is in that band, JK.

Wastefall (ok not quite in the top 10 but i had to say them because its a BRILLIANT new prog band from Greece, and they are SO GREAT that everyone is going to like them)

I was going to mention these guys too. They're a total Pain of Salvation clone, but if you can get past that lack of originality there's a great couple of albums to listen to.

Hmm they are NOT a "total Pain Of Salvation clone", they have influences from Nevermore (most of the riffs are aggressive in the way Nevermore riffs are), Fates Warning and Pain Of Salvation of course. Their blend can be considered unique and (yes) original since they even use some traditional Greek folk melodies.

Forgot to mention Dead Soul Tribe here, which is another no brainer IMO if you like your prog metal dark and heavy, and the PW reissues are well worth checking out. And as I've said many times, the 73-74 Crimson albums are mandatory, often considered the birth of progressive metal, as much as I hate to associate the M-word with KC it's hard to argue that...

"Wounded" from Enchant is very good. Except that one, they are just a poor man's Fates Warning.

Where do you come up with this stuff? Enchant sounds nothing like Fates Warning! Both bands are great yet very different.

Other than that... great recommendations... though I do find it interesting that you like Wastefall so much considering they're widely regarded as being Pain-of-Salvation-esque.

Yeah, forgot about Dead Soul Tribe. They're Murder of Crows album was excellent. Good call.

Also, Magnitude Nine's Decoding the Soul is pretty cool.

OK so I know Vanden Plas, Karmakanic (man, Goran Edman rules but this is too proggy for me), Symphony X, and Rhapsody already.

Enchant I'll look into....

Aren't Spocks Beard really, really proggy and wanky a la DT? I guess I should add that bands like Ark and Evergrey don't become technical-guitar-wank fests, so let me interject here and ask for bands that don't get too widdly diddly....

Somebody recommend me Prog Metal albums that kick as much ass as Towers of Avarice

Spock's Beard is God damn atrocious. :puke:

Vanden Plas are decent but not what I'm looking for.

Upload some Ark.

Fav Prog Metal Albums

Prymary S/T
DT- Awake
Depressive Age - Lying in Wait
And other albums that tell a Story

You know the good shit.

Which Enchant album is a good starting point?

You are the driver, you own the road, you got the fire, go on explode, you got the fire, so let it out, you got the powaaaaaaaa, SO STAND UP AND SHOUT!!! :kickass:

Zero Hour's last album, "Specs of Pictures Burnt Beyond", was ridiculously awesome. Heavy, dark, and just enough wank-age. Plus, their new singer definitely has an early Geoff Tate sound to his vocals. love it.

As I consider Towers to be the finest pure Prog Metal disc ever, your request is a bit of a tall order.

If you're looking for Prog with a Metal edge, as opposed to a Rock sensibility, the following might appeal to you:

Pagan's Mind - God's Equation. Fantastic vocals, fantastic guitar playing. One of the tightest bands I've ever seen live.

Communic - Waves of Visual Decay. Think Nevermore meets Doom (the sub-genre, not the video game).

Redemption - The Origins of Ruin. Great lyrics. Guitar work is Nick's finest. Some of Ray Alder's best vocal work in years.

Symphony X - V: The New Mythology Suite. Their finest work.

And as unknown suggested, check out the latest by Zero Hour. Chris Salinas' vocals will most likely make or break the disc for you. He's very different than Rosvald (Towers). As unknown said, he's straight out of the Tate school.

How the hell did this thread get this far without a single mention of Riverside? Did they not yet exist in 2005 or something? A cross between Anathema and "normal" prog-metal, I don't think prog-metal gets much more classy than that. (of course this goes to JK's original question rather than RiA's new one).
