bands i WOULD compare shining to: burzum, forgotten woods, dolorian, bethlehem, katatonia... note that only two of these are even remotely "black metal" for the most part

never heard creepier vocals than Varg ... but this comes close.

If you do indeed like this album/ Band I would also pick up Livets Ändhallplats the second full length. Widely regarded as their best or so ive been told, It's actually one of my favourites up with The Eerie Cold.

Ummmm, the intro was really cool. The rest... meh. I just don't hear anything exciting in this type of black metal.

Well I usually do really like this type of BM and always see this band listed among other good bands of this style, however, Shining just doesn't do it for me. They just seem a bit...I dunno, immature perhaps?
