Alright, as some of you know, I was originally going with Wolves in the Throne Room but since we've covered that in a different thread, here's plan B (and actually, I'm glad I went with this now because it should interest a wider audience.)

So here is SLUMBER -- a Swedish "doom/death band" according to their press release -- but allow me to elaborate on their 2005 release, "Fallout":

1. Rapture: http://s40.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=3NX2I6Y3MC5CU3NB9VUXV9EXFC
2. Conflict:http://s40.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=18JH9K864NG5H1220NMJ06K6IY
3. Where Nothing was Left
4. Fallout: http://s40.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=1KI2VR260AP9C292K4NB7VA1I4
5. Distress
6. Dreamscape
7. A Wandering Star

Think: KATATONIA + MAR DE GRISES + NOVEMBERS DOOM + old EVERGREY + RADIOHEAD.

Firstly, it rules.

The production is exceptionally clean, and there's not a single clean male vocal in sight. It's low-pitched death vocals all the way.

Quite honestly, on first listen, you're probably going to hear the Katatonia influence more than anything else, and there's no doubt they've been enthusiastic about bands like RAPTURE or DAYLIGHT DIES attempting to further this style.

HOWEVER, There's a lot more than meets the eye -- try it with some volume and headphones. YOU REALLY NEED TO FOCUS ON THE GUITAR WORK especially on the solos -- just stunning, and the piano helps keep the whole album afloat.

Optional Reading (just stuff I want to share about where the posted songs work for me):

"Rapture":
0.55m -- that half a second pause before the double-bass drums kick in
1.30m -- the reprise of that piano melody in the intro alongside the vocals
2.20m -- the guitar solo.
3.15m -- it gets a little "spacey", some f/x....and then the female choirs fade in....singing in latin keeps it all very dark sounding. Just a brilliant outro, reminding me very much so of MAR DE GRISES' "To see Saturn Fall".

"Conflict":
0.30m -- the guitar melody, so 'bright' and yet the vocals are just so fucken guttural
1.13m -- the female vocals return, and this whole set piece sounds so much like old EVERGREY to me, at least in atmosphere
1.45m -- the guitar lead work -- lots of harmonies, reprising the main melody line

"Fallout":
THAT GLORIOUS FUCKEN INTRO
0.52m -- bonus points for anyone picking up the RADIOHEAD vibe, very much 'flying in the sky' type feel
2.21 - 2.52m -- just that whole section gives me wood, before it plummets into the acoustic guitars
5.48m -- where the guitars fade out into that very sombre 'practice amp in a basement' outro riff

So needless to say, this album made my top 10 list of 2005. One of the reasons I never posted my fave albums from last year is because I wanted to keep this one on the backburner.

Hopefully several of you should really appreciate this. I fucken hope so. :kickass:

Holy shit, that sounds absolutely awful beyond words! :ill:

But alright, I'll check this shit out tonight, because you seem to genereally have decent taste!

So I listened to these before tonight.

I've VERY impressed. I've heard of this band, but I'm a little surprised they haven't made more of an impact. This guitar work is beatiful.

I'm just extremely impressed with these guys. I'm definitely getting this album. What's this band's current stuff like? Have they gone to clean vocals? I think they'd be awesome with clean vocals. The death stuff is great too, though.

Nate - according to Metal Archives, they only have 2 demos out before this release. It seems that this album was released in 2004 (Europe) and 2005 (USA) -- I didn't get the promo until Spring of '05.

I did read somewhere that they have a new album coming out this year -- their own website, however, is useless: http://www.slumber.se/

If anyone is interested, here are some reviews I pulled from the first few google hits:

Chronicles of Chaos: http://www.chroniclesofchaos.com/reviews/albums/2-3923_slumber_fallout.aspx
Seventh Circle: http://www.seventh-circle.com/rev95.html
Metal Observer: http://www.metal-observer.com/articles.php?lid=1&sid=1&id=8175
Metal Review: http://www.metalreview.com/ViewReview.aspx?ID=1551

Quite well received I would say.

I'll be interested to see where Erik and General Zod go with this recommendation, simply because they fall at opposite sides of the spectrum (most of the time). On one hand, there is the Katatonia / Mar de Grises influence, and on the other, it's a solid production with a very dark & prog ambience.

JayKeeley: Could you please put year of release, label, and so on on your next recommendation?

Laziness can't be tolerated around here.

I just realized I probably had this promo at one time. This was released by Candlelight in the US, wasn't it?

Good recommendation jay. The first song does remind me of mar de grises, which is a good thing. Really liked the second song as well, very bmdish.

They definitely remind me a LOT of Rapture, which is not necessarily a bad thing. Very accessible, very emotional, nice production, solid songs. Enjoying it so far! :kickass:

Good!! -- and let me know what you think of it on the second spin. It sounds even better second time around.

Yeah, the Mar de Grises similarity is definitely there. Actually they've taken the best of MdG and thrown it into the melting pot.

The point in Fallout where you bring up the obligatory Radiohead comparison sounds like total Katatonia to me (as does the clean part in the middle)...like Mar De Grises, this can be safely classified as doom/death but there is so much more going on here.

Well to me this sounds like lots of things like I said: Katatonia, Mar de Grises, etc. I hear an element of Evergrey shitz as well.

It's not doom-death like Morgion etc but whatever genre it is, it's really really good. Volume and headphones speak wonders in this case. I must have had this CD laying about for months , then I threw on the headphones....

it's pretty cool... it sounds finnish a whole lot

kinda like shape of despair but speedier... but generally fuckloads of katatonia influence

For sure. I wouldn't be surprised if it was Rapture that spurred them on, but I only say this with 2 clues:

1 - song #1 track title
2 - A picture of a moth on the actual CD

Hmm... :tickled:

It definitely has a Finnish production, at least for a Swedish band, I'll say that much, haha. Glad you like it.

P.S. Half of this band used to be in a black metal band, fwiw.
